I have a buffalo air station that's at least five years old. it's worked perfectly most of that time but in the last week or so i can only get reception when i'm very near it - it doesn't work in other parts of my home.
i've tried several other channels but the problem is persisting. any advice on what i can do?

I can see the signal strength, that was the problem originally, but now my daughter has had a go at the ip etc configuration and we can't get an ip address. i'm using an unsecured connection in my area at the moment. any idea how to fix this? called pccw and there is a signal coming to my home but the wireless apparently has stopped communicating with the modem even though they're plugged in together.
any ideas how to retrieve ip address/connection and sort this out? please help...

I would suggest that you read the "How to setup DHCP" in the user manual.
If you don't have it, google it.
My hunch is that maybe the wireless port is aging...

Thank you for your input. You're right - the router is ageing. I called Buffalo in the end and they suggested bringing it in, but since it's five years old (at least), I decided to get a new one. And everything works fine.

Even quality enterprise equipment wears out. Ethernet ports have a fine number of packets which they can send/receive before they start crorrupting packets...
In the past two weeks I've seen two networks with the ethernet ports which where corrupting packets at a very consistent rate.
The end result is that bandwicht is capped, on a per socket basis... each connection maxes at 1 to 2Mbit, depends on the frequency of errors...
Personally I never use thse home equipment as you have no way to minitor them and find errors and identify problems before they happen....
