If I add a family member's name to my property title, do we need to pay stamp duty?

If you add a family member’s name to your property, it is in practice “selling” half share of the property from you to your family member which you need to pay stamp duty for the half share of the property (i.e. if the current market value of the whole property is HK$5M, then the transaction will be stamped for the consideration of HK$2.5M). There are alternatives that may meet your specific goals such as a Declaration of Trust.
