How much does it cost to join California Fitness or Physical? How to get the cheapest rates?

Work in Mongkok and live in Telford - need gyms that are in the vicinity.

Will the rate include towels, gym gear and locker? What extra fees are there, e.g. use of pool, sauna etc. (Will not be using their PT services).

Thank you all and have a good day!

why not just call them and ask - then you can find out of the rates include someone doing the exercising for you.

I did, called a few CF clubs yesterday but got varied responses. E.g. one sales rep said the current "special promotion" price for 1 year is HK$5000 up-front payment. Another said a "joining fee" will be required, but that amount would depend on whether there was a reference from other members/prior membership. Then the MK sales rep said he could offer a "special friendly deal" of HK$600 a month for a 1 year contract and no joining fee, but if I signed for 3 years, he could do a deal of HK$3xx (wouldn't say how much, insisted I meet him in person to get that deal.)

Am confused with all the differing responses, and frankly found the various sales reps dodgy. Was therefore wondering whether anybody here is a current member and what sort of fees he/she is paying so that I could start negotiating with the sales rep. Any help/advise is appreciated!

Be careful re CF. They have a reputation for ripping off clients. In Korea, they closed up branches and left their clients w/out any refunds. While in Singapore, I constantly hear from colleagues that they are a dodgy group to deal with.

The Korea thing was in the paper so you can Google it.

I think if you do a general Google search re CF you'll probably see the litany of complaints about CF.

Have a look at Fitness 1st or Pure (more $ tho) or Seasons.

Thank you Stinker. I totally agree with your comments. I am looking at California Fitness because they have gyms in both MongKok and MegaBox, and these are locations close to the work place and home.

In my telephone conversations with their various sales reps, I do get the feeling that they are trying to rip me off. That's why I am hoping to get some feedback on what current members are paying so that I have some "ammunition" when I negotiate with them :-)

I would suggest stop by the gyms you are interested in. Yes I hear bad things about CF too but then again know people that have been members for awhile and they are ok. I have no idea of their prices (I am a Pure member). my experience when i was first shopping around was: i would visit at least 2 branches of same gym and ask the same questions and see the answer. but better to do in person than over the phone. and remember just be firm and say: Thank you. Not interested at this point. and walk away -- the team in CF is pretty 'aggressive' lol!

Thank you luwin81. The latest situation is I have now got a friend of a friend who will go negotiate for me at Physical. Don't know how this person will do it, but have been told that he used to work for CF/Physical and knows their "dirty tricks", and will therefore use this knowledge to try and get a really low price deal at Physical. I don't know how he will do it, but will wait and see.

For other readers who may be looking at joining Physical, after my insistent questioning over the phone, one sales whispered to me that the monthly cost for signing up for 2 years would be in the region of HK$330 (towels included). Apparently, Physical sales reps are not supposed to give out costs/fees over the phone and insist on potential members/enquirers going to their gyms to enquire in person (probably easier to apply the pressure tactic!!!).
