I am going to start a non-profit group whose sole aim is to increase (recover!) Hongkongers' standard of living by tackling the out-of-control congestion problems we face. These are increasing day-by-day and are caused by a myriad of factors: loose enforcement of traffic and parking regulations, no oversight or care for increasing the number of vehicles on the road (why is the government doing this?), drivers with lack of training, such as people who are used to a different driving system, storefronts and/or buildings opening up construction and blocking pedestrian traffic for months on end. WHEN I LIVED IN HK 2002-2003, it was a pleasure to move efficiently from point A to B, either on motorbike or via foot. Now, it's a terribly stressful and SLOW event. What effect is this having on our economy? Our stress levels? Our way of life?

Discussion Topic 1: While the government regulates the number of taxis on the road by issuing taxi licences, there is no attempt to regulate the number of 7-seater vans, which are defacto taxis. Yes, these can be rented with driver by the day at any border crossing for a relatively low amount of money. The drivers are often unaware of HK rules. They contribute heavily to the congestion. Ok, the HKOAC is up-and-running on Facebook. Please 'join' and post your pics. Today, I got pics of triple-parking (not double parking), totally blocking traffic all the way up to King's Road, just a brown 7-seater parked in the middle of the street, basically. Hanging out and waiting for a passenger to return. //
