Hi, is there anyone celebrate their kids' birthday with the orphans? how is the procedure? how much is the budget?

we're not a super spender family with hundreds of thousands to donate, just a little thought to share a little happiness with those little fellas :)

i'm thinking to celebrate my son 3 y.o. birthday in an orphanage so he can see and feel that still lots of kids are not that "lucky" out there.

we live in taipo.

cheers.

A really nice gesture. But at the same time, wouldn't the orphans feel jealous or envious that a boy who's lucky enough to have parents are celebrating right in front of their faces, reminding them how unfortunate they are?

An alternative suggestion is to teach your boy the joy of giving. So for his birthday, you find out how many children there are in the orphanage, go to toys r us to buy them all a gift each (all individually wrapped and picked by your son, names written on the pressies), then let your boy give them out to them? He doesn't have to feel how "lucky" he is but he will at least experience the joy of giving, how being generous makes him feel happy inside also.

Hi Gemma, it's a wonderful thought.

lets say we're celebrating with everyone who is having birthday at the same month, have some yummy bites and gathering, have fun together and everyone will be having a little gift at the end of the day. i think it'll be more joyful for the kids than just hang around with cousins and uncles/aunties who are busy with their own smart gadgets all the time :)

you're right, it is important to teach them the joy of giving, instead of only demanding.

do u have any idea which orphanage with not so many kids? as i google, most orphanage has hundreds of kids. and is it a common thing to do here in HK?

cheers.

While I can't shed any light on this it is a great idea. My parents also had one of my birthdays when I was quite young at an orphanage

Hi, I see this post was a while back but I thought I let you know that recently, we set up Twopresents.com which allows party guests to pool money for a local charity that is then split between the charity and your child's gift. So, your child will get one, meaningful gift and the rest is given to a local charity. As a parent, I struggled with the same you ladies are discussing above and tried to solve this problem hence Twopresents.com. Check it out! An easy and very meaningful way to celebrate!
