Hong Kong ID card for newborn baby

ORIGINAL POST

My wife and I have just been blessed with a new baby. We obtained her birth certificate already. Next we need to apply for passport and ID card.

At what stage should we apply for an ID card> Is it required for a newborn if you want to travel?

Must they hold a passport before getting an ID card?

thanks.

You will need the passport first, and then apply for dependent visa for HK. HKID cards are issued when children turn 12.

ID cards for children under 11 are only issued to those who are HKSAR passport holders which are applied for and issued at the same time. For those under 11 who are not HKSAR passport holders then all that is required is the passport and relevant visa.

Your child is entitled to a HKID only when he/she reaches the age of 11.

You have to apply for a passport for the child if you wish to travel.

Actually wierlaw you are incorrect. Those who are deemed Chinese citizens applying for HKSAR passport must also apply for a HKID card at the same time. IF they are not Chinese citizens applying for an HKSAR passport then they are not entitled to an HKID card until they are 11 years old.
