In HK, Baby last name different from parents?

My wife and I are expecting our son to be born in 2 weeks here in HK. We both have HK PR

My last name is triple-barrelled (i.e. ABC-DEF-GHI) due to the cultural norm where my parents are from.

For our son, I want his last name to be simplified to just the first part of my last name, i.e. ABC, and eliminate the "-DEF-GHI" parts.

I do not want to go through the process of changing my own last name.

From my own research, I know the HK Birth Certificate does not list the baby's last name, only the given first name, and includes the full names of both parents, and assumes that the baby's last name will be taken from either parents' last name. These names are then applied for HK ID card and HK Passport applications.

Appreciate if anyone can advise how I can apply to HK Immigration for my son to have the shorter last name for all his documents, i.e. birth certificate, HK ID, and HKSAR Passport.

Thank you.

Hi, you just need to have a solicitor write a deed poll stating that you wish to name your baby whatever the name it is and then present this document to the authority when applying his HK ID and passport.

We did that for our daughter.

Thank you for the info. May I ask for a solicitor contact you used for your daughter?

I already emailed a couple firms but they either didn't reply or said they can't support me with such document. Thanks.
