Overheard tourists/business men complaining

As I was getting off the airport express I overheard two western guys complaining about the pollution, having sore throats and not being able to do any outside exercise due to concerns about high pollution. They also mentioned they will hold their conference in Singapore next year. I felt very embarrassed for Hong Kong. We sit on a ton of money yet do nothing with it to improve the air. Very embarrassed indeed.

The reality is that the Hong Kong Government cannot do much about the pollution but appears to be doing what it can in some small measure, albeit there is no noticeable impact. I believe most of the pollution is imported from across the border, however, I'm sure the prohibition of ships burning bunker oil within Hong Kong's marine boundary would be a positive move towards improving the situation futher.

Yes much of the pollution comes from the prc but check this out:

Donald Tseng despicably did little, if anything, on this problem (or the bigger issue of housing shortage).

Most of the pollution is across from S China which our HK CEOs have no clout to lobby with the corrupted powerheads in the Delta.

The fact that CY is able to get Christine Loh on board - a good sign. Let's give them the chance.

HK govt pollution index, read somewhere they are under reporting the REAL situation.

HK is losing not just convention business, but TALENTED expats (wifh families) to S'pore, not just on air problem but schooling problem.

'TALENTED expats (with families)' need China far more than China needs them.

Yes some of the pollution does come from over the boarder, however, a large percentage comes from HK itself and mainly at street level. Check out the Clean the Air website. Too much traffic on the roads and lorries/buses are far too old and chuck out hideous polutants. The idling engine law is an absolute joke. I was quite excited when I heard Christine Loh was on board but since the anouncement was made her silence has been defening. The polution problem here is shocking and getting worse.
