Moving to HK in March/Apr

Hello,

I have accepted a job in HK and the office is located in Quarry Bay. I'd need to look for an accommodation (flat share) and have a budget between HKD 5k - 6k. Preferably the travel time to work is between 30 - 45 mins. As I don't cook, I'd need to live in a neighborhood where food is easily available. Can anyone give some suggestions of which area I should be looking at?

Also, what a typical monthly expenses would be like for a single man? Besides, of course, food, transport and housing, my other expenses will be on:

1. Mobile phone (with data)

2. Gym

3. Occasional movies at the cinema

Thank you!

Flat shares http://hongkong.asiaxpat.com/property/

Gym - Pure Fitness is around HKD1200 per month... there are other lower priced good options

Phone - unlimited data plan is around HKD350 per month

Cinema - I think around HKD100

I don't like commuting so have always preferred to live near work... lots of options in the Tai Koo area...

No offense but does your social life really only consist of an occasional movie?!

None taken! Actually, yeah. That's about it. My gym and other sports are my primary entertainment.

Flat share for 5-6K? What kind of package have you got (it doesn't look lucrative enough for an expat)? Is it something that is rewarding for you? Or just to gain experience?

It's more for the experience.

I'm not sure whether you can get good accomodations immediately. Welcome to HK then!

(Your best bet may be a serviced apartment, but they're expensive. Try airbnb dot com).

I will probably live with my granduncle for short term while I look for a place :) Have considered a serviced apartment, but they are REALLY expensive like you said.

I have budgeted about HKD150/day for food, is this reasonable? Haven't really know how much I should allocate for transport though. But I won't be living too far off from QB I suppose. So hopefully that would cut down the cost for transportation a bit.

Local fast food (Fairwood, Cafe de Coral, McDonalds, KFC, etc) will be around 35$ on average per meal. Lower if you go to HK Chachantengs. If you live close to the tram, transportation will be 2.5(?) per trip. You should be fine. Accomodation is the biggest expense.
