Hi there,
I'm an Australian who is going to be in and out of Hong Kong for the foreseeable future with a new business I am part of setting up in HK.
Random and perhaps slightly naive question, but I haven't found an answer anywhere else, do you have to have a visa/HK ID to sign a contract to rent an apartment? I'm moving soon to start up the company and will be without either of these for some time but want to rent ASAP.
Will I need to show proof of income or bank statement to secure apartment?
Thank you

Thank you Cara.
I assumed it would be an issue.
I really would prefer to live on my own but perhaps it would be easier to move into a share flat?

If you can give the landlord a 2 yr deposit then perhaps that would solve the problem.

Unlikely any landlord will give you a lease without an ID card. Your biggest problem will be getting utilities as you won't be able to without an ID card. That goes for phone/mobile contracts as well.

HarliQuin - I don't think you can paint all landlords with the same brush. As a very long term resident never had that problem and neither have many of my friends. Yes, a few but by and large not a problem.

Thank you for all of the responses. Very helpful, and even though perhaps seemingly obvious, as an outsider it is hard to find out. Much appreciated.
I can't apply for my ID until I have my working visa, correct?
Feeling like a bit of a difficult circle to enter...

How about renting a serviced apartment until your ID card comes through?

that's probably the best plan CW, thank you.
I'll be going over to open the company, but after incorporation etc, does anyone know how long roughly an investment visa will take to be approved and when I can expect to be all sorted with an ID?

Passport is sufficient for serviced apartments http://hongkong.asiaxpat.com/property/serviced.asp
