Just FYI, normal route is to first go to your GP, who will refer you as necesary. Often the GP is capable of checking them and if no referral letter from gp, insurance may not refund the dermatologist.

I am from Australia - the melanoma capital. I went to my local GP about a mole or two and he said they were fine. On a holiday back to Australia, I visited a GP and asked the same questions about these moles. They were identified as malignat and had them removed.

My feeling is that local HK GP's really do not have the experince in this field and therefore, are unable to identify maligant moles.

Go home for a holiday and get a body check done.

Thanks Bob, good advice. Ironically I flew in from Sydney last night but didn't have the time to get the checks done whilst there. Will book it in next time. Cheers.

There are many expat doctors (including Australian ones!) in Hong Kong, who will have the required knowledge/experience of identifying malignant moles ... don't wait to go back home ... find a doctor here and get checked straight away!!

HK Advantist Hospital, HK Sanatorium - 2 top hospitals in HK do have OUT PATIENT dept that have inhouse specialists. I would visit those. I go to Sloane Cheung in Hung Lung Center, CWB. He's trained in UK. His number can be via 1081.

There is a government specialist Dermatology clinic around the Sai Ying Pun area. There may be others as well in other districts; I'm not sure. If you go to a public Hospital such as Queen Mary (or one closer to where you live) and ask, they should be able to give you a referral there. I'm not certain whether a GP can refer you to a government facility like that, but probably so. Being a government facility, there would be a wait, which could be short or long depending on the perceived urgency of the case, but at least you would get to see a real Dermatologist (specialist). I went that route some years back and had a small growth (mole?) removed from my back. The process was as smooth and professional as I could have asked for, no different really from what you would get in a private hospital, except for the physical surroundings (functional rather than cushy). Hope this helps.
