Husband brought 2nd wife to Hong Kong!

Hey guys,

My relative brought in his 2nd wife to Hong Kong and their children recently. I understand that Hong Kong does not allow polygamous marriages and as such if he declared her to be his wife then I doubt that the immigration department would offer her a visa.

There may be a few possibilities as to how he brought her in:

1) Did not declare her as a relative and then he brought her here on tourist visa

2) Divorced his wife without talking to his wife about it. Because divorce does not require the signature of both parties from my knowledge. Neither did his wife sign a divorce document.

I have typed up letters to the Immigration department twice, notifying them that the wife he just brought to HK is married to him on a polygamous basis and hoped that they would revoke her visa. I doubt this would happen since we don't have proof that she's the 2nd wife (we know for a fact and it's common knowledge within our relatives in our hometown).

I was wondering if anyone could provide any advice on this matter? My relative intends to rent another flat for his second wife in Hong Kong...to keep her here for the long-run.

Please advise.

Thanks in advance!

This occurred in Hong Kong.

The relative married his 2nd wife in a country where polygamy is legal. The marriage did not occur in Hong Kong or China but the Middle East.

I don't think the marriage certificate of someone else's marriage certificate is readily available for the public? I may be wrong. Due to the privacy ordinance in the Middle Eastern country, I could ask.

Could you clarify what you mean by "trail of divorce"? Since the man did not talk to the 1st wife about divorce...there wouldn't be a trail between the 1st wife and the man. It's a possibility that he divorced her individually. As from my knowledge, he doesn't need his other wife's signature/consent to divorce her.

He won't tell me the answers to these questions as he wouldn't want me to oppose his intention of helping his 2nd wife and children from attaining permanent resident status in Hong Kong.

He married her overseas so I'm assuming he does have a marriage certificate. Should I contact the consulate of that country to obtain them? But isn't that against the privacy ordinance?

Yes, we don't know whether he divorced his 1st wife. Neither does his 1st wife know. He may have divorced her under common law but he hasn't done so under Islamic law (I asked the 1st wife).

I am unsure how this would work. However I do not think HK allows for polygamous relationships.

With the amount of adultery going on in this city, it is the last thing the city needs....
