Is Discovery Bay only for families?

Hi

You'd rather count 1 and a half hours to door to door from DB to QB. The commute to the airport should be ok (30mn by taxi, 1h by bus)

Rather than deciding remotely where you want to live, I would recommend you negotiate 2 to 4 weeks at a hotel with your new employer, and use those to visit the city and decide for yourself where you want to live (which will of course also depend on your budget)

I think DB is for everyone but it is more suitable for couples and families.

Move to DB when you have a girl or boy friend. otherwise it is heavy drinking and kebabs.

Tung Chung has nice, high rise apts. with club facilities, shopping centers, restaurants. Free shuttle bus to MTR station. There is also an apartment complex right next to the MTR station. No monthly dues or entrance fees

to the club houses if you are a tenant or owner. Pay as you use. 10 to

15 minutes to the airport. Lots of airline crew. Check out Caribbean Coast,

Coastal Skyline , Tung Chung Crescent. Many real estate agents in Tung

Chung Plaza and also in Caribbean Coast shopping center. Housing less costly

than Discovery Bay. At all those locations, it is easy to meet people. Discovery

Bay has 2 plazas where folks hang out , meet people, have drinks & eat. Entrance fees and monthly dues to join the clubs. Many

associations that you may join. Tung Chung is assessable by land (bus & train).

DB by ferry or take the bus to Tung Chung train station (MTR) which will take

you 25 minutes to Central Hong Kong, 2o mins. to Kowloon. The MTR will take you anywhere you wish to go. Pleasant ferry ride.

In DB, 17K could get you a 2-bedroom apt. Less than that in Tung Chung.

Nice atmosphere. The places you mention don't compare.

Discovery bay is only 30 mins by an airport bus direct to the airport through the DB tunnel.

I used to live in DB and used it many times. There are quite a few singles who live in DB, but yes there are a lot of families with children.

You can use the club facilities of gym, tennis and swimming pools if you become a member of the residents club.

There are many good restaurants, bars and shopping facilities in DB, DB tends to be less " life in the fast lane" compared to central in HK. DB has a regular ferry service to central in Hk, and regular internal buses within DB, as it is a private car free zone.

There is a hotel in DB it is called the Aurberge, you could ask your employer if you might stay there while you check out the territory.

Not sure if you've moved already, but I definitely recommend you get a hotel before you move so you can look around.

I definitely think another option is: Park Island - Ma Wan (and will help you keep to the left of 17k). It's an island but has a couple advantages over DB. Namely, taxi access 24/7 and a much shorter commute if you take the bus/mtr option. It also has a ferry just as DB. It has newer club facilities than DB (5 pools; 2 indoor - 3 outdoor and a local beach) and the buildings are newer as well. They just finished the newest last year, townhouse style low-rise right by the ferry pier.

There are a few small restaurants, but we usually eat in central if we're eating out anyway. It also has a shuttle bus to the airport every half hour so you'd have all the access you need. One of the biggest appeals for us is the quiet and the green space, it's a bit more local too (can feel like you're not even in HK in DB, imho), and more and more younger expats, single or young families are moving there because of the cheaper rents.

Since you zeroed in on DB during your search, I figured you didn't need to be in the middle of the hustle and bustle and may be keen on a greener, quieter atmosphere like we do. Good luck with your search! :)
