Mandarin or Cantonese?

I want to get a head start in learning the local language before I move to Hong Kong in a few months.

The problem is I'm not sure which one!

I always thought Cantonese was the main language and several websites have told me 80% of people in Hong Kong speak it. However a friend from Hong Kong (who speaks Cantonese) says she wishes she spoke Mandarin instead and that in her opinion Cantonese is a dying language.

Which language should I start learning?

I suggest Mandarin... If you can speak Mandarin, people from both HK and Mainland China can understand you; but if u speak Cantonese, only HK people understand.

If you are clever enough to learn Mandarin, you will quickly pick up some Cantonese.

I have been trying to learn some Cantonese for a while, but find it quite difficult as people tend to speak English back to me. If you're wanting to travel, Mandarin is going to be more useful but some Cantonese phrases here and there do go a long way.
