There are many resources online you can use to find local events. Yelp is a popular choice. It has restaurant reviews and upcoming events.
Coming from SF, there's plenty of local event magazine such as Metro etc...

When in NYC, go to any of the decent hotels in mid-town Manhattan, you'll find magazines/local guide booklets in the the lobby. All are free. Enjoy NYC.
