Canadian Non-Resident: Do I need to file a final tax in Canada?

Hey guys,

I moved to HK back in mid-2013. When I filed my 2013 taxes, I was still a resident because I had worked in the first half of 2013 and I stayed in Canada for more than the 183+ Days threshold mark.

However in 2014, I worked in HK and haven't gone back since (don't expect to go back either). Do I still need to bother filing my Canadian taxes for 2014, to tell them that I am now a non-resident etc...? I got a few monthly interest bank payments (Maybe totalling up to $200 CAD) for the year, and that's about it. I have nothing else there.

Would appreciate if anyone who has experience with filing for non-residency to share your experiences.

Hi there just wanted to know if you can possibly let me know of your experiences in regards to applying for non-residence status in Canada.

I arrived 3months ago and still haven't applied for non residence was it a pretty forward process?

My understanding is that you do not actually have to make an application. What you need to do is cut ties from Canada including such things as not renewing a drivers license... not maintaining a home in Canada (you can own a property but you must rent it out or be seen to be trying to rent it out -- if you leave it empty that is a problem) --- you definitely should not use free health care if you go to Canada ...

A trust lawyer for HSBC and Weir & Associates in Hong Kong both explained to me that declaring non residency will not matter if you are still determined to have close ties (as above) -- the fewer you have the better.
