Abortion in QMH question

ORIGINAL POST

I'm planning to have abortion in QMH, just got a referral from the family planning association. I just want to know on my first visit to QMH and I give them my referral, will they do the operation on that day or will they still appoint me on another day to do it? If they will appoint me, how long will it usually take from that first day that I go there? and on the day of operation, how long do I have to stay in the hospital, do they have to admit me for a couple of days or everything will be finished in one day? I hope someone can help me and no lectures on pro-life and such things please. I have a 1 year old kid and me and my husband can't afford to have another one just yet. Thanks in advance.

I realize it's legal but I suggest you give this a bit more thought. You are a bit flippant about going in, having a procedure and then going on with your life. Have you considered adoption. I am fully pro-choice but as an adoptive mum, I want you to really think about this before going through with this. You cannot change your mind once it is over. One more child isn't going to break the bank and adoption is always a viable and wonderful option.

I'm definitely pro-choice too. And a terribly annoying atheist. I used to stop and argue with the religious nutcases protesting outside of abortion clinics on my way to work in Sydney.

But as a Dad, no way could I contemplate abortion in my own family. It would definitely be temporarily financially inconvenient in our situation if my wife were to fall pregnant, but we're a family now. We would find a way. So can you. We're talking about siblings now. I hate that I'm sounding so judgemental - it's usually an argument I would aggressively argue the other side, but imo, it's such a different question when you're already a family.

Edit: oops I just realised that I've posted in a women's only forum. Ed - feel free to delete my post.

To answer your specific questions:

Did the FPA refer you to an outpatients' clinic in QMH? If so, the doctor there will examine and assess you and if they consider you need an operation, they will probably give you a date for admission to an O&G ward. QMH admissions are usually done by QMH doctors.

It is unlikely that the operation will be done on the day you first visit QMH. I am guessing the operation is going to be a D&C (Dilatation and Curettage). You may need an anaesthetist's examination before the operation, and various tests will be done before the operation as a matter of routine.

D&C patients are often discharged on the same day, or within 24 hours, unless there are complications.

you will be on the que, 1st come 1st serve, you need to come several times before you can have a date , it depends on the availabilty of the operating table.
