Creative Shipping Solutions

Given the prices large removal companies quote for shipping household effects back to people's home countries, does anyone know of more imaginative solutions? For example, rather than have one firm do everything door-to-door, can you break the process down, i.e. someone packs & possibly also takes to a shipper; the liner sends the container to wherever; and a local firm picks everything up at the destination. Naturally this would be more time consuming but if you save HK$20-30k, why not? Curious. Specific ideas and who can be used would be welcome. There are many businesses in HK that are not truly competitive (e.g. one bank wants HK$190 to transfer funds to another local bank - come on, with today's technology!!!). Are the big packers enjoying too rich a picking from a mainly 'corporate funded' gig?
