China Telecom Wireless Woes

I recently installed wireless internet connection in my Shanghai apt.

However, it is coming up unsecure.


When I call the 10000, the China Telecom operator tells me that their internet line is secure enough. I should not have to worry.


If I see unsecure, it is my computer specifically. She says that i have to generate my own WEP key to lock my computer.


Now, I'm from the States and I remember how those WEP keys are generated, but it doesn't seem to work the same way here in China. I've gone to a password site that asks me to create a new password but to give an old password. Old password does not exist.


Anyone can give me an idea how to secure my laptop?

If my wireless connection is not secure, does that mean that other people in my building can use it?


All new to me since I just got here.

What is the password site you went to?


Usually you need to go to the website which is inside your wireless access point, and enable securtity (mac address, WEP or, better, WPA)


Anyway the instructions that came with your wireless access point/AKA router should explain how to do that.
