Passport and Nationality

Hi,

I have a question to ask. I was born in HK but raised in Malaysia. So, I have 2 nationalities : Malay and HK (CHINA). And I plan to travel to Guangzhou in Jan 2013. Then, I wonder is it ok to use my HK Passport to show to China Immigration Officers? Because I know that China doesn't allow its citizen to have dual nationalities. Will I be arrested?

Because I can't speak neither Cantonese nor Mandarin at all.

If it wasn't OK to do, then, I will have to ask for VISA at Chinese Embassy here then, show my Malay passport instead.

Please help me guys.

Thank you so much.

K17, I'm assuming you are ethnically Chinese. Many HK Chinese people have two passports. China may not technically recognise dual-nationality but the way it interprets it is you have only acquired a foreign passport and you are still Chinese until you renounce Chinese citizenship. My children hold British and HK SAR passports. They go into China using either a Return Homeland Pass or a HKSAR passport with ID card (and for the record I'm a Caucasian Englishman married to a HK Chinese woman. The kids get the HKSAR passport because they were born to a Chinese mother on Chinese soil even though my wife also holds a UK passport which she acquired before meeting me). If you are worried, just use your Malaysian passport. Not being able to speak Chinese shouldn't be a problem. You just tell you are a HK Chinese who moved to Malaysia as a kid. Another possiblity would be to go to Hong Kong and apply for a Return Homeland Pass at china Travel ( a 'Wuih Heung Tsing"). You just show them your HKSAR passport and fill in a form. Nobody batted an eye-lid when I turned up with my kids to get the card. You need to be able to get someone who can write Chinese though to fill in the form though.

Thank you so much malka and Loyd.

So, it wouldn't be a problem to use HK PP, right?

Is there any HK people got arrested by Chinese gov for having 2 nationalities before?

I also think that many HK chinese people own 2 nationalities (UK and China), is that correct?

Thank you so much.

K17. If you are from HK, it shouldn't be a problem usuing a HK PP. My kids use them all the time to go into China and they also have UK passports. To be honest, I think in China nobody cares unless you are a) causing trouble or b) making money - and they think they should also be getting a cut.

Just be aware that you will not be able to enter China using your HK passport alone. You will need either a home return permit or a visa in your Malay passport.
