Are your kids learning how to play the piano? Is the teacher good and can I have his or her no? I do prefer a woman.

Hello Mimi! My name is Heidi Mak and I have just moved from North America. In my 16 year long career (going on 17!), I have been a music director, supervisor and studio manager in different functions, as well as private piano teacher. My education are mostly in Canada and U.S.A., under instructors from all Julliards masters, Yale master, and University PhD professors. My late father was an Italian opera tenor and had been a long-time vocal instructor in Hong Kong Baptist University. Numerous students of mine have made me very proud by winning competitions and few are currently in music schools or university as music majors. More importantly, I have great relationships with my students, who have inspired me to remain as a piano teacher.

I am located in Mid-levels in Hong Kong and will be available to discuss. My price begins at $100 per half hour. Feel free to contact me at i.heidi@hotmail.com. Children over the age of 4 to adults. Please expect only English speaking instructions.

Cheers, Heidi Mak

To find a piano teacher in Hong Kong you need to go to Facebook where there are two groups that register Hong Kong piano teachers, the Hong Kong Piano Teachers Association and Hong Kong Piano Teachers Circle.

Good piano teachers will be well qualified and you could ask if they have completed the CTABRSM, a professional development course run by the UK examining board ABRSM.

The best piano teachers take their own professional development seriously and will probably be members of e-musicmaestro, a UK website that shows piano teachers the best way to interpret and teach the pieces on the current examination syllabus. You will probably find that Hong Kong teachers who use it tend to follow best practice, since they have access to current music teaching and learning theory.

I agree with pianomuso, it is quite important to find a teacher that is properly certified to teach and take their profession seriously. Qualifications are not only limited to Royals school CTARBSM but I believe that is a good start - more like the minimum requirement. Teacher should continue to attain the next qualification of DipABRSM of Teaching; and best to have a Bachelor or Masters degree in teaching their instrument.

Mimi, if you are still searching for a teacher I could recommend Miss Wong, an experienced and certified teacher from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Australia. Her information and pictures of her studio can be found at:
