Help!! I am wondering if anyone knows any airline mileage program that will award mileage to children under the age of 2 years old.
The details: We used to buy our son an infant ticket because he could fit in the bassient. However, he is now 1 years old and is too big. Our last flight from HK to San Francisco was really hard--- our son was not happy on our laps for 14 hours. In the future, I plan on purchasing him (full fare) his own seat and bringing his carseat on board.
However, I have learned that under no conditions (I have checked only with Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines) will my son be allowed to accrue mileage. The airlines told me this is their policy (children under age 2 cannot join AsiaMiles or KrisFlyer) and Asia Miles told me of their 200,000 members, no one has ever complained!! I can't imagine that I am the only parent who thinks this policy is unfair.

Thanks so much for your advice! I just signed my son up for United Airlines Mileage Plus. I also learned today that I can sign my son up for Air Canada's program. Both of these are Star Alliance.
Thanks also for filling me in on the possibility of a "child fare" at 75% of the fare. I'll have to check into these prices for our next trip.

British Airways have a houselhold program so you can accumulate miles for all members but the only drawback is you can only spend them on the same members ie you can't buy tickets for anyone else.
Virgin - if you have a gold card - will allow you to collect miles for the rest of your family but you have to pre-regster. You can spend them as you wish.

Lovelygirl, interesting! I just took the Qantas rules as-read and never bothered.
BTW you don't pay 'full' fare between 2 and 12 - "only" 75% of adult fare, so I guess you don't for under 2 either. Yes you get your own seat. However redeeming miles is always at 100%.
Vera, no airline programme adds miles to another passenger's membership. You can transfer points to a family member but that is different.

No probs HKmummy. Just don't sign up on both programmes - it's a pain as you cannot consolidate miles from different programmes even within same Alliance.
Lammum - usually under 2 fly for free and do not get a seat, so of course no Airmiles. We are talking about children and babies paying 75% of adult fare, that must be paid if they want a seat. I do not consider that "nowhere near" adult fare. Also, all airlines I know of give children above 2 Airmiles, so why not an infant *if* they are paying the same fare??? Also as I mentioned, it cuts both ways - when claiming a ticket for a child, you still redeem 100% of the points - no such thing as using only 75% of points.

We had no problems with United Mileage Plus. You purchase a seat, you get miles, no matter how young the passenger is.

Kids under 2 don't fly free, they have to pay 10% of full price fare.
