Hey guys,

I currently live in a flat that was built in 2004 and has multiple cat 5e cabling going to each room, I would like to have Ethernet connectivity in some rooms to the router but I need a contractor to connect the existing cables (preferably) or run new ones at a reasonable cost. Are there any contractors on here that can do this or an be recommended?

Thanks in advance

James

Hi James

So, you got cables, and you are happy with location of the outlets now ?.
Are the outlets not connected to the cables ?.

You can purchase all you need at Wan Chai computer centre to terminate the cat 5 cables to lan outlets for example.

Check a little on internet to get idea of how layout could look; router where, switch if needed, and so on.
Then, take a picture of how it looks where router shall be, cables, and the outlets where cable comes out in rooms you wish to use. Go to WC computer centre and ask; second floor there is a good shop that can help you if you ask nice (i think :) - i mean help, and suggest what you will need to make it work; wall plate, some crimp tools for terminating cables, etc.

If you feel its too much; they can perhaps help you with contractor but its probably going to cost a fair bit for something that is not that complicated once you have got the hang of it !

Hey Guys,

OK, I guess I should have made this a little more clear but thanks for all the replies especially MAC-010. I do know how easy it is to terminate Ethernet cables actually I already have all the equipment and know how as I do a lot of networking both for home and business work but the problem I'm facing is that the cables were actually used as telephone cable. Using Cat cabling for telephone wires seems to have become prevalent around 2000's which I think is a great thing but my attempt to use a wire tracer cant find a cable from the two locations I want connected, the other rooms seem to have cables running to each but not from where my modem HAS to come out (according to PCCW) and where I actually want it. So I think I need someone who is a more of a local expert with these things to see if they are able to connect the wires the way I want them. I easiest way I see of doing this is actually going to the telephone junction box and connecting the wires but management wont let me do this unfortunately :(.

Hi James; ok, i see.

Is it for LAN use or do you want rooms connected for using for example HDMI over Cat5 etc ?.
If for LAN and connecting to network; is there no router in flat so the cables all come together there ?.
Or, could you add a pocket router in one room, and continue on to the next room ?.
Difficult to visualize options but perhaps draw it up on paper and see if you find another solution.

The wire solution in Telephone junction box seems workable (i never accessed that myself; i assume its outside flat). Netvigator etc must be able to help. Did you own flat or just renting ?. Perhaps overkill if rental.
Any Wifi options worth exploring instead, or Power Plugs with Ethernet (supposed to be more stable now).
