moving to HK

Hi,

I'm planning to move to HK shortly from India . I need a few details before I finalise my decision.

My queries are

1. We are a three member family with a 9 year old kid currently in the 4th grade of an international school.

Query: what will be the cost of schooling in HK in a similar international school?

2. I have a existing home mortgage loan back here in India which is approximately USD 1600 per month

Query: what should be an ideal take home salary in HK? assuming that my prospective employer will not provide an accommodation

I would prefer an accommodation near the school rather than my work place..

my work place is in Gloucester Rd, Causeway Bay

Thanks

60K HKD is more than enough. International school like ESF should cost you about 10K. Rent varies depending on where you want to live. Check out gohome.com.hk for pricing. food around 3 to 4k for 3 persons. If you decide to hire a helper that will cost you $3920. Transport will also depend on where you want to live but should be a fraction of the cost.

It really depends on the job. I was earning 60K twenty-five years ago, plus full expat benefits including a 25% end of contract gratuity, travel, health, education and accommodation. That was a managerial position, admittedly.

What are your "necessities"?

60K without accomodations might be tight, depending on your lifestyle (and if you will continue to finance your India mortgage).

Biggest expense is housing, it will range from 12-30K a month depending on a lot of factors (you can look at Chaiwan, Tai Koo Shing, Kennedy Town, or further away in Kowloon, or furthest in New Territories). The best suggestion that I come about in these fora is actually to come here first and take a look at things yourself before making fix decisions.
