Mid Autumn Festival - when to go out with Lanterns

Hi, this year's Mid Autumn festival is falling on a very long weekend and I am confused as to which night I should be taking my kids out with their lanterns. As I normally understand it, it's normally the night before the public holiday, but which night is that this year? If anyone can help me then that would be great. I wouldn't want to be out with my kids on the beach with their lanterns on the wrong night! Thanks.

Hi Squiggles,

According to the HK Government's site on public holidays, "The day following the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival" is 20 September (Friday). This means that the actual night of this year's Mid Autumn festival is 19 September. Go with the kids on the 19th, that will be the night when locals etc will be out with their lanterns.

20 September will be what is known as "chase moon" day, and usually there will also be people with their lanterns out. But there should be more on the 19th.

Have fun!!

APOLOGIES Squiggles, just re-checked the HK Government's site on public holidays. Seems I made a mistake (!!don't know how!!??) - "The day following the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival" is on 1 October (Monday). Sorry about the mix-up...

So go on the actual day: 30 September 2012.

Hi Squiggles,

The actaual day will be the 30 September. Normally people will bring their lanterns out on that night or the day after it.

Hi Squiggles,

Actually the Mid-Autumn Festival is 15 August in the lunar calendar, which is 30 Sept 2012 of the Western calendar. So you may find the date of the festival varies every year. Chinese people eat mooncakes and play lanterns that day.

Enjoy the festival with your kids.
