My Husband and I are moving to Hong Kong in June and the company my Husband will work for is in Sha Tin. Does anyone know if there are any communities or buildings housing Expats in Sha Tin, Tai Po or other close areas?

We have lived in Hong Lok Yuen for about two months, and would highly recommend it. We previously lived in midlevels on HK island, but now with two kids that wasn't an option. HLY is about as close to a western neighborhood as you will find in HK. Pros: quiet, nice environment, community feeling, reasonably priced (by HK standards, anyway) detached houses with small yards & garages, good grocery store, school, club in neighborhood. Cons: houses are 20+ years old and in various states of renovation, not much nearby in the way of nightlife, restaurants, shopping etc., helps to have a car (though shuttle/ train takes about 1/2 hour to Shatin, about an hour to Central).

Depends where in Shatin. If it towards Ma On Shan side, then Sai Kung is a nice alternative with many expats. It's nice and green with a good sea view.

Then again, if you stayed in a more local area like Cityone you'd really understand the people and the place more. Cityone is also very convenient for food and transport.

Thank you for the input everyone. Can you explain what Cityone is? is that the name of a complex in Shatin?

Cityone is a big estate in Shatin. It comprises over 50 individual tower blocks with flats up to around 1100sq ft with river and racecourse view. It's got a couple of handy malls and is around 30 mins to Central by express bus during non-rush hour times.

We started off living in Fo Tan, near Shatin, then Kau To Shan, there are a lot of expats that live out that way, although all over, not in one particular spot. Its only 30 mins from Sai Kung, which has a huge expat community, or Hong Lok Yuen, just passed Tai Po, but that is a long way to get into town from there, its a bit isolated, but worth a look. You can get everything you need in Shatin, New Town Plaza is a very good shopping centre, good Ikea, good for cycling along the river.
