ESF vs. HKIS

i know there's been alot talked about on int'l schools in HK but to be honest, from what i've read so far, i'm still not sure as to what is best for us or rather the children who're high school kids & bilingual in English/German (stronger in English) - GSIS is out as we've checked the school .. not for my kids. We're in HK for 4 months now, on top of waiting list for HKIS and kids are attending an ESF school currently. Kids were in American/German school in Germany before, hence more used to American schooling/culture. One thing's for sure: children - very highly motivated in academics and sports - will do tertiary edu. in Europe. Are the kids better off by staying in the ESF school?? When it's said that HKIS is not strong in academics, what does it mean exactly and how does this compare to the ESF. PLEASE HELP! All responses appreciate .. Thanks!

Thks for the reply. To your questions ... are my kids happy, enjoy classes etc in the ESF school ... I must say it's hard to say really! As this is their 1st time in a "British" schooling system, they do compare it with the American (attended bilingual American/German school in Berlin most of their school years so far) ... but having said that, they are also somewhat flexible which is a major plus for us parents, since this is our 2nd move internationally. They were in ISKL (in KL, M'sia) before. Moving can be very unsettling for kids. They are still keen on HKIS (being the American school) although they are at the same time ready to stay on in ESF if we think it's best for them there. Hence my/our "predicament." BTW, our children are twins aged 12.

One other consideration (if it is one for you), is cost. I can't give exact figures but I'm pretty sure HKIS is substantially more than ESF on school fees.

Just curious kobold--why wasn't GSIS for your kids? Am thinking of sending our son, who is Swiss nationality, there. Granted he will only be going into the pre-school, but we have heard GSIS has one of the best reputations in HK for international schools.

Hi 24. I'm actually not in doubt at all of the good reputation GSIS enjoys within the HK int'l schools! We checked the secondary section and weren't exactly impressed with the facilities (eg IT); also we were told extra-curricular activities are not one of its strengths. As your child is attending the primary section, you might view and value the school from a different perspective.
