i am about to move into a new flat and am looking for the best broadband prices. after chatting with the NOW / PCCW folks on every street corner, i can get a 6Mb connection for HK$210 / mth. what other plans are out there for the moment -- does anyone have anything better?
thanks all.

are you sure they charge you HK$210? because you mentioned 6MB, i guess you are talking about internet connection n not their Now TV. You shld be able to nego for a better price. $210 too expensive.

thanks all for the feedback. stopped and chatted with yet another NOW / PCCW rep on yet another street corner and the best prices are:
6Mb internet connection -- 208 / mth
3Mb internet connection -- 180 / mth
these prices include free installation, some free (aka lousy) NOW TV broadband channels, free internet modem, free TV broadband box. so long as you sign to an 18 month agreement. 18 months is of course rediculous. so, it turns out you can alternatively pay HK$800 up front. after this credit runs out (~4 months) you simply pay month to month with no contract.
also of note for people looking for fixed line packages -- PCCW has a one year package for unlimited calls HK$110 a month with the first two months free (~ HK$92 / month).

Sure local calls are free but there is still the basic service charge, I think that's what asia2004 was referring to. If PCCW is charging avg $92/month, you can be sure the alternative operators are charging less. When I last looked at this about a yr ago, the avg price from HGC/NWT/WTT was in the $80 range.

i got broadband for $186 and one free subscription channel (and the free rubbish ones). Then i pay for espn/star sports too - $80 i think. This is a cheaper price because you tell them you will do the install yourself. BUT if you take the TV they have to install that themselves so they do the Broadband at the same time. it seemed to work for me - the guy on the street suggested it

I just subscribed today with PCCW: Charging 218 for a 6MB broadband; including the crap free channels. I think it is hard to find a cheaper offer. (Unlimited I mean)

Problem with that one is the 18 month contract. If prices fall within the next year or so, you are still locked on at $218. It's a strategy employed by telcos/ISPs when they foresee that competition will hot up and prices are likely to fall across the board. The crap free channels are just an inducement to purchase the paid quality ones.
OneBB is offering 6M broadband unlimited for $190.
12 month contract.
Plus you get the 7th month free.

Buying from the big player is never the cheapest.

I managed to negotiate with them for 9 months commitment only since I have to leave before that. I took me an hour and a half but it worked. I Agree that PCCW has a a very good service. And I forecast that their customer service won't cause me a problem.

Can I ask a few questions here:
1) Do I need to have an existing telephone service in order to order ADSL , or if the jacks are already there can a provider just come in and connect
2) what is the waiting time to get connected. I've recently returned to HK; when I left 2 years ago there was a backlog and it took about 4 weeks to get a service appointment.
Thanks!

I think I'm paying I-Cable $99 per month with a commitment for 1yr - but I get only internet - no TV.
