Hi, I am getting some books by mail from the US. It is being shipped USPS. The package will be too big for the mailbox in the apartment. I am worried that they may leave it near the mailbox and not bring it to the door. Anyone with firsthand experience?

It really depends on the individual postman I've found. Mostly you will find a slip as Cara states, but if you're unlucky your package may mysteriously never turn up. I ship all important items to the office, where there's always someone to receive the item personally, just in case.

One more follow up - my brother is sending me a camera from the US. Should I be worried about import duties and customs in Hong Kong?

Getting important stuff sent to the office is the best idea. Small pakages and the like are usually no trouble...but you never know.
If it is USPS they may ship through DHL, which is a courrier company. They will leave a card and you can ring them and they will return at time when you are home.
