Does anyone know where I can get documents (for use within the jurisdiction of the US) notarized? The US Consulate does it but it is quite expensive (US$30). Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

US notary public are not allowed to notarize documents outside the state where he is licensed. Therefore, it is impossible to have documents notaried by a US notary public overseas. You should have your doucments certified at the American Consulate General in Hong Kong instead. As far as I know, such service is free. Therefore, I am not sure of the charge of US$30 a you described.

The service at the Consulate is not free. US$30 sounds about right. (It used to be $50, but they figured out the cost of providing the service is not so high, so they lowered the rate.)

As to whether the Consulate price is a "rip off" -- did it ever occur to you that it might just be a tad more expensive to provide that service (i.e. pay someone's living expenses) in Hong Kong than in CT? You can argue, if you want, that your taxes should pay for it, and you shouldn't have to pay the whole cost of the service. But that's a decision that Congress made, not the Consulate.

Write to your Congressman, and then vote against him/her if you don't get an answer you like. That's the only way to make a difference on issues like this one. Oh, and while you're at it, point out that the high visa fees have a terrible impact on the national image, cost our tourism industries heavily, and cause retaliation against Americans.
