Hi there
Just wondering if there are any iconic Aussie foods that you cannot buy in HK. For example Tim Tams, Vegemite, Milo etc. I want to get stocked up before I head to HK this year.
Cheers

Thanks for the postings so far.
Well I probably won't know all the things until I'm there and start craving for it.
So for you personally are there Aussie foods that you crave that are not stocked in HK?

How about aussie beer like VB?
Please support our advertisers:
Vegemite, weetbix, nutella, timtams, Milo, cordial, Aussie steaks and lamb chops, VB, Heinz tomato sauce, Pura milk and extra virgin olive oil from the Murray, red/white wines (Barossa, Penfolds, BBlass, Wyndham estate, etc), Aussie dips - hummus, babaganoush, beetroot (yes, the cards say it's Oz), Tassie salmon, Australian honey, Tassie chilli and herb mixes, Australian rice... the list goes on.
Yep, mate... they're all here!

Dont you think it's a good chance for you guys to forget fish and chips for a while? Eat something healthy and not too fatty. New life style here and go back with a slim figure. Well, dont be offended but seeing so many overweight people in the west.... you know what I mean... As the previous thread said, Hongkong has most of the things you need, especially when you go to Central. So good luck.

Hi expat97,
I found the Tassie chilli and herb mixes tucked away in that corner at Great where they put the lentils. It's on the left-hand side, top shelf. They've got a pretty nice selection and I stocked up on a couple of things last time I was there. Tassie honey and preserves are in the same section where they put all the honeys in. Somewhere in the middle if I remember correctly.
As to meat, yes, I do get it at Great but also from City Super in Causeway Bay. Depending on what's convenient and what they have. Prices are slightly more expensive at Great.
BTW, I also found Nudie juices at City Super! They stock them every 3 weeks! Great stuff!

That's alright. I m happy that you are eating health food.
Macobee
I agree 100% to what you said here. Actually I found it quite interesting to have noticed that quite a number of australians are quite reserved in their eating habbits and what TV channels to watch. I thought they are more open-minded people.

Mighty and macobee,
Disagree. I'm from Melbourne and it has one of the most diverse cuisines available from the number of nationalities who've immigrated there. In fact, I've seen more variety and choices of cuisines there than in Hong Kong.
But being in HK - 365 days of the year, I can only stomach so much Chinese food and yum cha! Even in Melbourne, we don't always eat the same type of cuisine in 1 week, let alone a whole year! My family eats a whole range of food every week - lunch could be Greek/Italian salads and breads, dinner could be barbecued seafood with pasta or Vietnamese spring rolls and pho, and breakie, weetbix and fruit juice. Friday night could be Lebanese or Thai food or Indonesian or Macedonian cuisine. Sunday could be yum cha down in the Red Emperor at Southbank or plain old barbie in the backyard with snags and chops.
I miss my Saturday morning shop at Vic Market where I go for my cheeses, wine and fruit of the season with the lively music from different buskers. Musicians from the Andes, yes! Country singer with barking dog, yes!
Point of my comment, don't judge our eating habits just coz' we miss some good ole' goodies from home. Fact is, I can almost say the same thing about HK or Chinese people in general in Melbourne. A lot of them don't eat anything without noodles and rice especially those who weren't born there. Fair's fair. Don't judge other people without knowing what they're really like.

The milo here is not the same as back home (really powdery. Tims Tams seem to have change on the shelves lately (darker chocolate, thinner and not as many in the packet, once again not the same as back home. You definately have to bring your own weetbix (everyone tells you they sell weetbix here, but there version is called weetabix and it taste like stale weetbix!)and don't leave without your own supply of Original Red Borrocas as they only sell the orange ones which once again taste like of red ones. Since you're coming over would mind bringing about 4, no make it 6 whole crivac eye fillets as the price of steak will make your cry. Also be prepared to pay $250 hk ($50 Aus) in a restaurant for a bottle of Oxford landing chard which you could bring over for about $4.99 Aus.
Don't forget my crivac eye fillet!

I've lived here for a few years now and am slowly weaning myself off of dragging bottles and jars of food back to HK with me from Oz. The others are right, you just have to make do with what's here (and theres a hell of a lot of Aussie stuff on offer here so really not much to miss).
Having said that, in terms of stuff you can bring, if you love Aussie type chocolate and candy, you can't get Mint Slices, Coconut Rough, Polly Waffles here. Also they have Picnics and MarsBars but they don't taste the same.
If you like to make things like chocolate crackles which require copha - you also can't buy that here. Some people I know bring that with them!
Kraft peanut butter is something I still bring over - the PB here tastes a lot different.
Red and green frogs, minties, fantales also come to mind as not being available here.

Well I apologize to those who got offended by my little advice and may be my English wasnt good enough because I did not mean to judge anyone here. I happened to have several aussie friends and all of them are a bit over-weight. But they are not big eaters at all. So I thought must be because of their eating habits. One is free to have his own choice. Being advised doesnt mean you are being judged. Alright?

Thanks for all the replies.
My stay in HK is only for 12 months. It looks like food won't be an issue and as people have mentioned, no reason why I can't experience the culinary delights of HK.
It looks like I'll miss the aussie rules more than the food.
Cheers

Guys I saw a few of you mention a shop called "Great". We've just arrived so are completely clueless - where is this place?. Also do they sell good cinnamon doughnuts - or for that matter does anywhere sell them?
Was also wondering whether there are any Aussie expats who get together to watch the Rugby League, or where I can see it broadcast?

Great is in the Pacific Place shopping complex (Admiralty MTR station is closest)
They may sell donuts- never looked

G'day Gabercro,
Great is the shopping place at the basement of Pacific Place, Admiralty station (if you're taking the MTR). Easiest place to enter is via the set of escalators going down right next to Starbucks.
As to cinnamon doughnuts, Pacific Coffee has them. They're not too bad. ABC Asia Pacific has cricket, rugby and Aussie rules :-)
