Hello fellow travellers!
I'm living in Hong Kong and looking to go on a trip to Guilin, but since I've heard it is such a beautiful outdoors place, I figured...what way better to experience it than camping and hiking?? So, I've did a bit of searching online and can only find information on very pricey organized tours. Does anyone know if this can be done without that level of organization? Does anyone have any experience or advice or recommendations, etc.?
Thanks for anything you can provide!

You could always try going to Yangshuo, around an hour west of Guilin.
There are a lot of climbers that go there for the limestone and so there are a number of cheap/budget style adventure trip organisers. They mainly organise climbing guides but I recall ads for hot air ballooning, cycling, rafting etc.
Cheap accommodation there so no need to worry if the weather turns foul.
To be honest, I think it would be simple enough to organise yourself unless you're looking to hire all the kit, too.
That whole area is stunningly beautiful and reasonably accessible. Take your gear to Yangshuo or Guilin; hire a motorbike/cycle/car; buy food... go explore.
Why bother paying for a plan?
If you really want, I can forward you names and numbers of some climbing guides in Yangshuo but I don't think that's what you need.
