Is milk really milk?

I've just noticed that the milk in the supermarket is usually "milk drink" or "milk beverage" - does that mean it's not really milk? How can I get real milk?

The only real milk you will find in HK is Dairy Farm Whole (not skim), Kowloon Dairy and Trappist. There might be a few small scale farms as well. The recent influx of foreign milk started with Masters Pura about 12 years ago to supply the coffee shops, and I believe they are all some sort of UHT treated milk made from powders and with dubious origins, for example the Meiji Japan brand is from SE Asia not Japan.

I had a friend who worked in one of the big accounting firms here. The firm audits Dairy Farm and told me that it is not "real" milk. It's reconstituted from milk powder.

Masters Pura had a lot of complaints regarding short expiry dates then was tested positive for bacteria a few times.

Meiji is cooperation between Japan and Thailand. It is real milk from farms in Thailand.

I think a lot of foreign brands are real like Greenfields, Clover

We get fresh milk delivered from a company called Farm Milk. It's real milk. They also have real 2% milk, which I have not seen elsewhere in HK.

We buy Clover Organic @ Fusion/International Park & Shop and Strauss Family Organic Milk & Avalon Organic @ City Super. I found it is hard to find organic, hormone free, non milk powder/solid milk here but like these two brands. Clover is infrequently stocked but the other two are always at City Super. Hope that helps!

Why would you want to eat anything grown in Hong Kong? You might as well just buy 'real milk' from a chinese farmer up the Pearl River, next door to the battery factory, which is probably where the extra milk comes from when they have more orders than milk anyway. There's plenty of imported milk from countries that don't have toxic water tables. Go to a proper Western supermarket.

People who still farm in HK have pride and won't make harmful food products, unlike their counter parts over the border. And Farmmilk is actually run by an Englishman.

I recently came across Paul's Pure Organic which happens to be non-homogenized, never seen one on shelf. I bought one and emptied it into two glass containers and let them sat in the fridge for two days. Then I was able to skim small amount of cream from the surface, which I used for my coffee. Fun to try.

Just read the label: "milk drinks" have water added; "pure milk" can be from milk powder unless the manufacturer gleefully declares "not from concentrate/milk powder." I buy organic labels or ones imported from Australia, the next best option is from the US. Oliver's charges $58 for a pint of Clover. Ouch.

Cheer is not a "drink" nor is it made from milk powder. It's stated on the carton. Imported from the United States of America.
