Ouch.. impacted wisdom tooth.. probably a major job. Growing horizontally into teeth.
Anyone had 'reasonably' pain-free and no complications experience with a good dentist in HK?
[short of pushing my luck, a dentist that doens't charge exhorbitantly for this procedure either!].
Looking for dentist with good 'bedside manner' and talk me through stuff.
Local one I went to barely spoke about procedures.
Thanks everyone.

just called up - the receptionist at Dr William Cheung's clinic not very helpful, when asked about wisdom tooth extractino fee, couldnt even give me a range and said need to consult with doctor first, with a HKD500 charge just on that.... Forget it!

Do you think HK$4500 is expensive or not? I went to my dentist the other day because one of wisdom was aching. He is a dental GP so he cld only do the extraction but not the treatment. I havent decided to have it extracted or treated. He has offices in Central and Shatin as well.

I've been quoted some rather ridiculous amounts for my case.
Agree with Kimmy above... receptionist was not helpful on the phone, so skipping Dr. Willian Cheung's clinic altogether.
Have made an apmt with Dr Sue from Owens & Trodd for tomorrow morning. Will let you know how...
I'd still prefer someone who can get it out today, but every clinic I call seems to be fully booked.
Does anyone know about the dental services of Owens & Trodd in Central?

I go to Dr. Wendy Mabbot at Owen's and Trodd. she has an excellent chairside manner - good music, sunglasses and very comforting. I would hightly recommend her.

So I went to see Dr Jude Leung for a consultation and must admit, was quite disappointed to see how "basic" the clinic looked (hardly any effort in decorating)....not to mention the receptionist and nurse hardly spoke english. But since i was already there, I thought I'd give this guy a shot. And now, I have to say that I plan to go back to this guy for the extraction.
Firstly, he spoke excellent (brit) english and had very good manners. (not exactly on the soft, friendly kind but nevertheless polite and reassuring as he seemed very honest)
Secondly, when I told him the reason behind my rush was due to my holiday plans over easter, he told me to have the extraction after my trip as it could get infected when swimming etc. I thought this was quite an honest advice as he didn't rush me to make an appt for the extraction with him. (even when I, pretty much, asked him. but then again, maybe he was fully booked up pre-Easter!!)
and thirdly, the price! for the consultation, x-ray (on one tooth only, anti-biotics (as i am in minor pain), painkillers and a disinfectant solution, it only came to HKD260!!!! For the actual extraction, the range he gave me was 700-2500, which I think is quite good too.
Dr. Jude Leung obtained his qualifications from the University of Edinburgh and his tel # is 2522-2891. (if you're calling for reasons other than donig a straigh-fwd appt booking, i would advise asking a chinese-speaking colleague to call instead, like I did. They are friendly though.)Gosh I sound like their PR person !

Very good and detailed information. So you will have yours done after the Easter. Can you come back with your results again? Mine was aching a bit but after I took the anti-biotics, now it was OK. 700-2500 is a reasonable price, though I m sure it wl cost more than 700 as it is a wisdom tooth which involves more complications than the others.

Hello everyone. Thought I'll share with you how my experience went.
Saw Dr. Sue Fernie fr Dr Owens & Trodd, lovely lady, who saw me on a short notice Monday afternoon.
As mine was deemed not a straight-forward extraction [impacted, curved end, windy roots],she refered me to another dental surgeon. Apparently, one who does this kinda thing every day! I was very appreciative of her honesty and having my best interest at heart.
Will definitely go back to her for check ups and hygiene maintenance.
Tuesday morning, trotted off to DR.EDWARD HUI from Dental Implant Surgical Centre, DISC.
State of the art x-ray equipment [I've got serious dental records now!] and professional staff all round - nurses, admin, etc.
Staff were very welcoming and I felt at ease immediately.
Dr. Hui is a lovely man, who explained to me in great detail how the procedure was going to be like. Was upfront about costs when I asked him.
It probably took only about half an hour or so to get the tooth out, under LA - 3 injections.
As it was not a straight-forward extraction, the cost?
A staggering HKD4400 [inc of surgery, medication, xray and a cold pack! :) ]
It was quite a "comfortable" experience. No pain when anesthetic was administered. Dr. Hui gave me a hard sponge block to bite on to help keep the jaw relaxed in an opened state.
The stitching was done very tidily - I stopped bleeding almost immediatley after the surgery.
I was not in serious pain at all yesterday. Took the prescribed pain killers, of course and antibiotics. Cold compress on the cheek, just in case.
All in all, no bleeding, no facial swellling, no gum swelling either. Woke up this morning, virtually no more pain. Just a slight dull pain around the area, but not crippled by it.
While Dr. Hui is expensive [the practice focuses more on cosmectic dental work], I believe I paid top dollar for top work.
This is excellent as I have to fly out tomorrow and was worried if the pain and swelling would cause me grief.
If I ever need serious work, or cosmectic one in furture, I'll definitely reconsider Dr. Hui.
Well, Happy Easter everyone and may you all be tooth-ache free this holiday!

Well explained! One short question, did Dr. Fernie charge you the consultation fee and/or referral fee?
Please support our advertisers:
She did charge me, HKD375 - consultation and x-ray. Didn't expect to get that one 'free' though! haha!
Mighty, if you do need to get yours done, I strongly suggest Dr. Hui.
Good luck!

Yes I need mine done as well and sure will try Dr. Hui as you suggested. But I m very very nervous....need to take time to save up my energy and courage.

I hear you, Mighty. The night before the surgery, I couldn't sleep.. and this is coming from someone who LOVES going to the dentist! Yes, I am a minority!
This time around, I got freaked out because it's not the straight forward extraction case.
However, I've been there, and I ask myself now, why all the fuss earlier?! The best thing is just go do it and it'll be over before you know it!
If you want to ask me more questions, drop me an email here and I'll contact you.
Cheers!
