Hi there!
So I am as yet to move to HK permanently but am starting to look at properties and have obviously noticed how bad the kitchen situation is. I love to cook so this is a challenge for me!
Initially I was thinking about only getting an apartment that had an oven in it, however I have been told that a lot of the ovens that are put in are small and low quality. As a result I have started to think seriously about getting a place that has a large terrace instead that I could put either a BBQ or maybe a Clay Oven. I was wondering whether this is a normal solution in HK or if there are other alternatives?
Particularly, I'd be keen to know where are the best places to get a BBQ from (and gas tanks). If anyone has experience with clay ovens (or some other form of outside oven) then that would also be great to know any thoughts on...
Thanks!

Or alternatively I guess maybe what would be better would be some kind of rangemaster outdoor oven type of thing. Am basically just thinking around the idea of getting a large terrace for entertaining purposes and using it to my advantage to get out of a cramped kitchen :)

There are a couple good places for grills but you will find that the prices are quite high to ridicuolously expensive compared to back home. If you have a container paid for by your company I would consider bringing one over.
The only disadvantage is you might have to retrofit the tubing and you want adhere to HK gas but some get around it. Not sure what local laws are so it might be best to find a good deal here...k
www.renaud.hk has the most affordable pricing and carries top end brands like Weber, Charbroil, Napolean etc...... You will occassional find some outdoor furniture retailer selling China factory grills but expect pricing to be 500% more than back hom.
In terms of meat I aways by my stuff throiugh http://www.porterhouse.com.hk/. Your again paying a hefty price but you will find that quality in these types of places can be higher than back home as most of the stuff is AAA imported prime meat.
I have an Egg and a Gas grill on my roof and obviously crazy about roof top grilling!

Thanks for the tips! Any idea where I could find a guy that could make the necessary adaptions to a uk gas cooker? Any idea where is best to buy the gas bottles, or are they quite common to find?

Hi, welcome to HK and happy cooking! When we moved to current rented house here, with just a stove but no oven, a decade ago we didn't think we would be here for long and of course now, in hindsight, we realise we should have installed our big range cooker in the large kitchen instead of stashing it, unused, in a spare utility room. (Note to self: should sell it in Classifieds.)
Anyway, we really haven't missed it as we use a barbecue in which we cook absolutely everything, including roasts, cakes, even soufflés etc. etc., so your plan should definitely work if you have a decent sized balcony and smoke/smells doesn't upset neighbours.
As Benboy says though, if you can ship one over you will save money as BBQs are expensive here compared to the UK. I don't know about the laws but very easy to change the regulator for local gas bottles yourself, or the gas company will do it for you.
We always get our (superb) meat from TC Foods in Hang Hau but location won't be so convenient for you if you're on the island and there alternative suppliers across HK.
Lastly, we've had Weber BBQs (very good) and a South African one (not so good) here and love the Renaud combi gas and charcoal one we use now.
