Moving during Pregnancy

ORIGINAL POST

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone has MOVED during a pregnancy. My friends keep telling me about this Chinese belief that you can't MOVE anything in your home while you are pregnant. However, we are scheduled to move out of our present flat next month. Is this really bad idea?

Thanks.

Truly the most frequent consequence of pregnancy is probably people moving houses... just to cater to bigger needs.

To share I did two weeks after birth and for the 2nd one 7 months pregnant...no problem. And it is easy in Hong kong with movers being competent and doing the packing for you.

In Hong Kong pregnant women have a kind of gentle "sickness" (joking) where they cannot do anything. Friends didn't even let me carry any shopping bags. You see common beliefs have little impact on my decisions but as I am not culturally Chinese I wouldn't feel a peer pressure as in your case. That part of question will be left to personal choice.

Chinese beliefs all stem from a practical need back in the olden times. They probably didn't want pregnant women to move because it was a huge production many years ago. These days, as minono mentioned, it is so convenient with the movers doing everything single thing for you. We also moved when I was 8 months pregnant. I didn't have to lift a finger. But even then I was carrying bags of groceries everyday and walking long distances. Hope that rests your worries.

I moved when I was 8 months with my first, 8 months with my second and when my third baby was 3 months. You know your own body dont do any thing silly as I am sure you are aware of. As to the chinese beliefs dont know anything about them.

Don't worry, I moved from Switzerland to HK at 7 mths pregnant with my second one. No problem, but I do stay away from the apartment when they move the big items such as bed and wardrobes just to stay out of the way. You will be just fine.

i think what your chinese friends were talking about is not so much a fear of physically hurting yourself from hoisting or lifitng heavy things, rather it is more an old wives tale of it being unlucky to move or build a new house while you are pregnant. i don't really know why but my mother and grandmother are firm believers in this old wives tale and will always advise against moving or building a new home while pregnant. I know that from a logical point of view, it doesn't make any sense, but remember it is a superstition, and those hardly ever make sense.

good luck with whatever you decide.

I moved to a new country with a 10 week old, moved country again when 11 weeks pregnant, moved house when 6 weeks pregnant, moved again with a small baby, and again with a new born. If you're going to move when pregnant then HK is the place to do it when the packers do all the work.
