My baby sleeps in a light weight grobag with a cotton body suit - the temperature recommendation is 21 degrees.
My oldest has a light cotton duvet on his bed and also sleeps at 21 degrees, any warmer and he wakes up in a sweat.

what if you don't have central heating?
Please support our advertisers:
old mac, of course, you don't need central heating. however, how do the first few posters calibrate the proper room temperature for the baby without central heating then (more blankets/layers?)?

Pregnant in Beijin, you are correct - infants have not mastered controlling their body templertures yet, so your rule-of-thumb of + 1 layer is right.
Don't other parents read the right books?? All the opinions are mis-guided and are really not good advice.

you have the feel the back of a baby's neck--- if it's cold, but extra blankets on or extra nightwear at night- if it's hot.....remove some..........always the back of the neck gives you the right indication. In general a temperature of 18-21 Celsius is the right temperature........not higher than that!

I've heard good things about the sleeping bags or gro-bags for babies. It's suggested that that's all they need plus a long sleeved t-shirt since theirs arms stick out and a sleeping cap. It's supposed to be quite warm and thick enough for an AC'd room but not too hot.
Has anyone had any experience with them?

Hey all - judging by the population of the planet coming along in leaps and and bounds, I am wondering why this thread had gone on for so long!?! The babies are tougher than we think - look at those who have survived god knows what conditions buried under rubble after earthquakes. One was born in a tree in Mocambique. I don't think that homosapiens are about to become extinct. We're on about central heating and one or two degrees up or down...AMEN old mac!

Old Mac - we were talking about ROOM temperature for a baby............I don't think you would let your baby sleep in a room which has 30 Celsius........I just gave an informative answer about ROOM temperature............oh well.........

Actually the guide lines on room temp. for sleeping are given in relation to sids (cot death). Someone noted the correct temp being between 18 and 21 degrees. As for babies regulating their body temperature I believe this is actually only really the case for the first month or so.
For the person how asked about the grobags - they are fantastic, even for HOng Kong where we really only ever use the very light one. Room temp will depend on the tog rating you choose.

Plus, isn't that why we have technology and innovation? To make our lives better? Why not try and find the most comfortable room temperature for your baby. We adults turn on the AC during summer months to stay cool. Sure, babies are tough, but we live in a civilized society, if we have the means, why not treat ourselves and our family a little better. It's easy for babies to get sick when sleeping in a room too cold and get heat rashes sleeping in a room too hot. It think this is a reasonable concern. Why guess when there are such precise answers out there.

There is no right or wrong temperature for a baby's room, however, overheating can increase the risk of cot death. Keeping the room at 18-22 is often recommended. Keep the room at a temperature that is comfortable for you. To check if your baby is too hot, look for sweating or feel the baby. Don't worry if hands or feet are cold. that is normal. If the baby is too hot, remove one or more layers or blankets. At 18 degrees the baby will need 2 blankets and at 22 degrees the baby will need one blanket. These guidelines are for babies wearing a nappy, vest, baby grow plus a sheet. At 24 degrees the baby will only need a sheet. If the room is hotter, clothes need to be removed. THis information comes from a UK Department of Health 2004 cot death publication.

My pediatrician said 20C... at all times, so I set the Air Con to 20C, AUTO.... it's fine. Baby's hands and feet are generally colder, but their face if place next to yours, if it feels colder than yours, then baby is cold. That's what our ped, and nurses said.

My A/C is turned on at 24C-25C right now and I feel great. I would be freezing at 20C.
