Hello,
Do you send your offspring to either of these pre-schools? How do you find them?
I have three English-speaking infants (two at 20 months, one 2 months) and would love them to learn to read/write Cantonese. I think I prefer Victoria as an environment, but apparently kids are taught 50/50 in English and Cantonese whereas Lingnan it's solely Cantonese. The major downside with Lingnan would be the 45-min bus journey each way.
Would my kids learn Cantonese at Victoria by being around mainly Chinese kids?
Many thanks in advance to any respondents.

Hi Tallulah,
I have recently been to visit both and am also in the process of making that decision for my 20 month old. Lingnan is totally cantonese and so your kids would definitely be in an enviroment where they wld be exposed more to the language and therefore be forced to learn it. Apparently previously purely english speaking kids pick it up after 6 mths . I have a friend who sent her son there and is now at 7 years totally fluent in cantonese. However, Victoria would be a more gentler way of introducing the language. I would suggest visiting each of them to find out more !

Hi there,
My son goes to the kindy there and my daughter will attend this September. I thoroughly recommend it even though you may not speak Cantonese (I do, but can't write). The teachers and the enviornment are very caring and the education is of a high standard. Yes, it's all in Cantonese but children catch on easily and the teachers do help them out a lot. At first, they will reply in English but when they feel the child can understand some Cantonese, they will reply in Cantonese. My son has spent nearly 2 years now and is very happy. HE has been accepted at Kennedy starting this September but I'm beginning to think that maybe I should leave hime at Lingan for another 2-3 years because it will be the only time he can learn Cantonese well.
The school is very airy, with natural light and an open roof top for sports. The fees are reasonable ($2125 including snack, excluding school bus). There are some extras to pay such as materials.
I think the best thing is to visit the school and see for yourself.
Hope this was of some use.

I've looked at KCS too - It is on our list :)
Such a limited number of Mandarin schools...

My daughter attended Lingnan last year as a 2-year old. Adjusted quite well after the first couple of weeks being away from Mom, Dad & Amah. She'll be back this year. I think total immersion is the way to go. Kids are like sponges regarding language absorbtion at that age.
But I want her in a Manadrin kindergarten as a 4-year old and for us, North Point is probably too far away. Any good all-Mandarin kindergartens close to South Side or Midlevels?

Victoria, IMS, ISF (primary) are all billingual.
I too would like to find a Mandarin immersion pre-school and kindy like Lingnan, but in Mandarin.
HK Vol - how did you like Lingnan? good class size? good attention for baby? creative and play or lots of homework?
Thanks

No homework for a 2-year old. She liked her teacher. Basically just play. I only expected her to learn to share, wait in line, take turns, and learn Cantonese. Class size of 15-20 I guess? She'll go again this fall. Would like her to go to a Mandarin immersion school as a 4-year old, but am still looking for the best one.

I think Lingnan is about HK$2500 per month. (my wife pays so I'm not sure).
It is located on Stubbs Road, below the roundabout where the Hospital is located.
I think that Lingnan is about half the price of Victoria, but not sure.
Pretty easy to get in your kid as a 2-year old, but gets progressively more difficult as they get older (and demand increases).
Has a good reputation as a "feeder school" to some of the more elite primary schools. Or so I am told.
