I know this is a mundane question... We have just moved from Australia to HK, with a small child, and I haven't been able to get his clothes properly clean since we got here. Food stains are the main problem. I've tried a couple of different washing powders and spraying with a pre wash stain remover. The only way at the moment seems to be to soak everything in Napisan before washing. Anyone else have this problem? Is it the powders or the washing machines?

Could be cold water so you might want to try using a powder for cold water washing.

If our water is really that horrible.....I wonder how other locals wash their clothes. Most of the washing machines sold these days are made either in the EU or China. So I think it doesnt matter where you are. I have a 16 months old daughter too, but I dont have the food stain problem at all. If your little ones clothes are dirty dont just leave them on the pile. Soak them in warm water (abt. 30 mins) with a bit of washing detergent, and then hand wash the stain before you it into the washing machine. Set your washing machine temp. to 40 degrees c will help too. Dont just use cold water.

Gumtree, you got quite a good imagination, and it sounds the world is moving for Austalians solely. Anyway, I dont have the problem at all. So choose whatever the best for yourself.

I don't think it's the water as ours seems pretty clear. And yes I'm doing the same things I did at home and it doesn't clean the clothes. I really notice any oil or tea/coffee stains.
Sunshine making a difference sounds probable to me as we have nowhere to hang our clothes here while in Aus I always dried them outside.
I also just rang one of the washing machine manufacturers and, to use his words, he said that the washing powders in HK are "pretty crap" and to use "biological" washing powder (many are non-biological which I didn't realise and have been using). So I guess it wouldn't surprise me if they also had different washing machines for different markets.
It shouldn't be the water temp as our water seems to be at about 30C out of the tap and our machines heats up the water anyway. (In fact it shrank a top that I thought I was washing in cold water.)
I think I'll ask friends to bring over some washing powder for comparison, and some Sard wonder soap as well.
Thanks for all your replies.

Buy PERSIL and you get your baby's clothes clean- wash all bibs and muslins at 95C......and yes- buy the biological one to get the clothes clean!!!! You can also try the ARIEL taps- I never had a problem with my baby's clothes and our washing machine is a very cheap unknown brand!!
Good luck

Thanks Star&Shine - I'd never heard of biological vs non-biological powders before, but then Aus only really has one powder for front loaders as most of their machines are top loaders.

I miss the smell that sheets and blankets get after they've been in the sun. Not that we'll need blankets for a while.

I cannot get passionate about laundry myself - but try that VANISH stuff - no I don't work for them at all, but seems to work for everything. I must say that when I had little kids and they dribbled that chocolate milk down the front...nothing short of a hand grenade will take that stain out! Shows you what powerful stuff the "chocolate" is.. Bananas also powerful stains - almost nothing takes that out.
Good luck

Yeah I notice everything turning greyish too. Didn't realise it was the dryer. So maybe I'll start hanging clothes on our curtain rods???
cdtr - I tried Vanish and it got some stains out but not all. I've found salad dressing (oil and vinegar) hard to get out. And tea and coffee, if I forget to rinse it straight away.
Gumtree - the guy I spoke said he used Castle, or to try Persil or Ariel. But to make sure they're biological ones (and biological does mean enzymes). He also said not all biological powders are the same as there are different types of enzymes that work better on different stains. Some powders have different types of enzymes and some may only have one or two types. (Do you come from the outback? Don't understand your comment re rain?)
Barbie - I know what you mean. It's great and we're loving being here, but I'm missing certain things that I'd taken for granted. And they're not the things I expected to miss!
Mighty - where do you live? Can you afford a house?

Well I cant afford the whole house (3-storey) but I live in the ground floor so whenever there are sunny days, I am able to do the line drying. I m sorry if I sounded rude to all of you. But I happened to have an Australian friend who complains all the times and saying that her country is the best. I m just fed up with her and she happened to be an Australian. I know every one is different n shldnt be generalized. But we are just human beings after all. And the honest truth is I dont have the problems you guys mentioned here. Like Sabi said - remove the stains right away.

Barbie - I'm going to see my therapist about it. Nobody buggers up a load of washing like I do - you know that renegade red sock that gets in with the white stuff....gets me every time, so I avoid getting involved with the process altogether.
AAIIIYAA....
