I asked this question in the 'Money' forum already, but was just wondering...
If I'm living with my child's father but we're not married can I claim the single parent tax allowance? I realise that the IR probably wouldn't like it, but I as can't get the married allowance (obviously), I sort of feel I should be able to get the SP allowance (being a parent, and according to their rules, single). Is there anyone else in this situation who can advise?

Are you in Hong Kong? Hong Kong's tax system is very straighforward, especially when it comes to salary income tax. Although you are physically living with your partner, in law he is no related to you at all. You do not declare anything about him in your tax return. Just by common sense I would say in your case, single parent allowance would apply.
