Yew Chung International School

ORIGINAL POST

We shall be moving from Singapore to Hong Kong later this year. We have asked many international schools. Yew Chung International School is the only one that has vacancy at the moment. However, I have heard some unfavourable comments from my Hong Kong friends. I wonder if anybody has any experiences about this school. Your comments are greatly appreciated

Just to follow up on my previous post I heard from my HK friends:

(1) most kids in Yew Chung Internation School are from HK. Although English is the teaching medium, Cantonese is widely spoken among the kids during playtime. Those non-Cantonese speaking kids are quite isolated. Is this true?

(2) I was told that Yew Chung takes in more students than they are allowed. Does any body know their class size, teacher to student ratio etc?

(3) While I was talking to their admission officer, she was pulled away suddenly because one of the students was hurt. This gave me an impression that thay are quite short of staff

(4) What is the ratio of HK kids to foreign kids (9 to 1, 8 to 2,?)

(5) The school is really expensive, are there any other add-on expense (eg donations) during the school years?

(6) If my kid is not happy with this school, how can I transfer him to other international schools. I understand most HK international schools will not have any vacanies in the primary levels.

I know i have a lot of strange questions, but I really need some advice, especially when no other international schools have any vacanies at this moment.

All advice are greatly appreciated.

How old is your child? You can also try Montessouri to begin with and wait for the waitlist at other Int'ls to clear. One one on Queeen's Rd. is good. Just by its location, won't be surprised that most of the children are local.

Montessouri International on Queens Rd. East is good. My daughter (6) went to Montessouri on Caine Rd. for 2 yrs prior to CIS. Yr son is young enough to wait for spaces at other int'l schools to open without too much interruption.

International Montessori School is on Queen's Rd. East in Wan Chai. My daughter goes there and we find it to be excellent. There is quite a mix of international and local students there. Each class has a dedicated English teacher as well as a dedicated Mandarin teacher. At the moment, my daughter can read more Chinese than English (she just turned five). The school has students from aged 3 through 12.

My 4 year old goes to Yew Chung, and he enjoys it. Yes, although Yew Chung's student body is comprised mostly of local HK Chinese, nowadays, most International Schools are as well. I appreciate the school for their strong belief in languages: English, Cantonese and Mandarin. But of course, the school cannot do it all. We as parents have to provide a learning environment at home to encourage picking up foreign languages. I speak English Primarily, my wife English/Cantonese. So when there is homework we can cope. For non-Chinese, it may be a bit harder, but the teachers are there to assist the learning process.

I know its a hard decision, but I think Yew Chung should be held in high regards...but no school is perfect of course

i know a person whos from Yew Chung who went to CDNIS for high school. to be honest, her english was not that great knowing that she went there since she was small. the tuition is quite expensive and i believe their campus doesnt look too pleasant. i heard they have to share a basketball court with another schoool. why is that happening when the tuition is so high?

I love the facilities and overall look of the campus of Yew Chung. However, what turned me away from the interest of sending my child there was when I was called by the school's secretary to bring my child in for an interview. After she told me when and what date, she said to me, "Oh, please remember to bring your cheque book b/c you have to pay for the deposit, and other things." I thought it was SO business oriented when she said that to me..... didn't even bother going back for the interview after the open day.

My friend's kids attend Yew chung and recently thinking change school. And she said that a good number of parents also thinking change school. The reasons are: 1. Yew chung kids' English level is not as high as other International schools. Many of them are local kids and speak Cantonese. 2. Some parents from secondary complained that one science teacher is tutoring YC students after school at his home, high tuition fee. They worry if he could grade the test fairly. Would he work as hard as at school and at home, becasue of that some parents want to leave Yew chung next year. 3. The school authority ask every year 7student bring their Mac book to school which claim that computers are tool of learning. Making parents so angry is the school also allow the students get online and play computer game during recess time. 4. Many parents are upset by asking them to ordered Macbook from school(no other brand is allow), so that the school get free Macbook from the computer company.
