Hi,
My husband is in the process of starting a business in HK and we will be moving over within 6 months all going to plan. But.....I have applied for our son to start the Australian International school next year (prep or P1), but there is a long waiting list. Talking to ESF it seems it is the same with them too, with the added complication of the school year already started and my son is not yet at school here in Australia so it would be a very tough transition.
How do expats deal with getting into appropriate schools for their kids? Is there a trick I don't know about other than apply apply apply, and ring regularly? Stressed!
Thanks
Simone

Simone..there are no simple answers. That age group is over-subscribed in both the schools you have mentioned. You could try Kellett School, The Harbour School; both are building bigger premises which may alleviate pressure on that age group; I'm not certain which years are going to the new campus. Perhaps you should be prepared to wait it out in Aust until you have a school place, or home-school your son yourself, perhaps with the help of a home tutor, when you get here. I'm an ex-primary teacher who has done this type of thing in the past. Keep trying all the schools and just keep calling. Good luck.

You could apply to ESF for the ESF Nomination Rights Scheme which will give you priority entry in an ESF School providing you meet entry requirements which generally are that your child speaks an excellent level of English. Priority is given for overseas passport holders living in Hong Kong and for applicants from overseas. For a year one child this would be your best bet as the chances of you getting a place would be very high but you will have to pay for it. Currently priced at HK$500,000 non refundable.
