Thanks. I read on an old thread that it was an interesting place to take your visitors for shock value! Doesn't sound too safe.

Cruiser,

It's an interesting place to go. I've never found it unsafe although there are some dodgy aspects to it.

Don't worry about people who spout HK patriot claptrap, they tend to be narrow minded & unaware of what HK is really about

A great thing to do with visitors to show them two very different sides to H.K..Take them to The Felix for c*cktails then cross the road to CKM and have one of the tastiest, cheapest meals you will find...a great night out. I think the worst part of the building is the smell of urine in the lifts..just hold your nose!!

One day after my husband and I had drinks with friends in TST, it was almost 2am. I saw many Indian and Pakistan, men and women, sitting or standing on the Nathan road, from CKM all the way to Miramar Hotel. I had no idea about what they were doing, but I felt unsafe immediately. A man hit my husband's shoulder and stared at him.

I didn't say they must be bad guys and it has nothing to do with color. It is human reflection when you see a group of people gather together for unknown reason at 2am, you feel unsafe. I will feel the same if I see 30 Chinese on the street doing the same thing, I will be scared too. However, we shopped in CKM without any problem in the afternoon.

I generally find the more negative comments about CKM to be tinged with racism or simple ignorance (not surprising in Hong Kong, whether from a local or an expat), although admittedly late at night CKM is certainly less inviting than Lan Kwai Fong. CKM and the surrounding area is one of the few enclaves in Hong Kong where the original Indian population (remember they have been here a long time, originally brought in by the British colonial administration for law enforcement or as traders -- why do you think there is a huge mosque in the middle of TST?) can live without being discriminated against.

I have stayed at a few of the guesthouses in CKM, as well as eaten in some of the restaurants, and even gone there to purchase phone cards and exchange money. At the very low end, CKM delivers value for money. CKM is no different from any other part of HKG (or the world) where the people work long hours in an attempt to improve their economic standing. Sure, there is some (mostly non violent) crime, but on a daily basis, there's probably more crime being inflicted on tourists from the electronics shops that line Nathan Road.

Chung King is where a lot of Indian/Pakistani people live when they first move to hk & can't afford to live elsewhere. Most people do not like to live there but rent is cheap. A lot of these people work/have businesses in the building- they work hard & no they don't all try to sell you fake rolexes. After midnight, it can turn into a whorehouse & you can see lines of prostitutes at the entrance. Sometimes you see brown men who've had too much to drink harassing other women. -Used to live near there and have been harassed a few times. A lot of (slightly more affluent) brown parents do not let their daughters go to Chung King alone because they fear they will get harassed/followed. -And yes it does happen, been followed several times too. But for the most part, the people there are just hard-working people trying to make it in hk. oh & the restaurants serve pretty decent food which is good value for money.

I find this debate fascinating. My inbox has been overloaded...thanks for all on the interest it has created. I am so curious that I have to have look, from a safe distance, and make my own judgement on safety etc. It's got to be an interesting place. We have only been here 6 months and I have experienced the hassling when we went to the Museum. The one thing that I am concerned with is the back stairs recommendation...I have a picture in my mind of a dingy stairwell. Do you feel totally safe going down these stairs?

Debates should not turn into a personal attack, it's not constructive & indicates a lack of acceptance of alternative viewpoints.

CKM is colourful & a bit dodgy but I think the danger element is overblown.

As for the relevancy of being HK born & having a different opinion, I cannnot see why this makes a difference. In my exzperience, many HK'ers have little interest in the rich & varied history of HK. he majority of families arrived here less than 60 years ago & they take little interest in what came before them.

HK doesn't need another LKF, it's crass & commercial with no soul. A pale pastiche of what it was before.

After reading the messages about this topic i have to say that I think John was not talking about the Gurkha's. Go Cat was talking about the history of the regiment and people here in HK but they were only brought out here by the army to work for the army and a lot of the Gurkha's who work here in HK as security personnel or as drivers are not descendants but from soldiers who left the regiment before the handover in 1997.Who with there families decided to stay here in HK after leaving the regiment.

As for the great CKM I love it and the whole concept of it good and bad. I go there to buy from the shops and also to eat. Saying that I go on my own during the day to shop and with friends when showing some of the great restaurants that are there.

As for the cat calls from the men . I have to say in my travels through India and then pakistan and into the Himalaya regions Nepal, Bhutan and even in China as a single female traveler most of the time, the other time with my brothers when allowed out of the army. You get it everywhere and i just smile and say no thank you.No matter what they say and i have never had any problems. :}
