Breastfeeding in HK

ORIGINAL POST

Where can I breastfeed my baby in HK? I was surprised (Well, not very!) to realise that there is no place to breastfeed my baby in Pacific Place. I was in there on sunday and all of the cafes were full too. Where else can you go in Central/Admiralty to feed? I presume Mothercare in Princes building will have somewhere. Is that it? I would happily feed in public but it is too hot to go in a park and all the seats inside in the aircon are taken. By the way, why don't many Chinese women breastfeed? I don't get it!

Anywhere you want! My experience is that the locals will not ask a westener to cover up or go elsewhere. They will do it to locals though according to a couple of Chinese girls I know.

Bit hard if you can't find room in a cafe but try to food hall or evena seat in a store. I fed in Giordano and the staff thought it was hilarious!

You can feed in the loos at Great - they've got a chair set up by the sinks if I remember correctly. Most of the hotels have nice comfy chair areas by their mirrors in their loos - I've used the Conrad, Shangri-la, Mandarin and Ritz. As Joshmomm said as a westerner I've never been told not to feed anywhere but my Asian friends have told me that they've been asked not to feed on a number of occasions.

I am a Chinese and am facing this headache every time I go out. There are 2 baby changing rooms in IFC which are fairy reasonable and have chairs for feeding. All the JUSCO department stores (even in Tuen Mun) have baby changing room and have seats with curtains for BF mums. Don't expect them to be spacious! Forget about the one in SOGO as you have to go miles away to get a key to open the feeding room.

Unfortunately M&S has now closed. The toilets in GREAT do have a dirty old leather sofa you can sit on to feed, but quiet frankly the general state of the toilets in there are not fit to use let alone sit in there and feed your baby. I used to pop in to one of the hotels in Pacific Place the Conrad or the Shangri La, there is always a seat in the coffee shop you can use or if you are not comfortable with that there are comfy chairs in the Shangri La ladies that although is in the same area is seperated from the toilets themselves - always very clean and most comfy for feeding. A good spot in Central is the Mandarin Ladies which have a very suitable seating area for feeding. Failing that find the nearest Hotel, Starbucks or Pacific Coffee. Good Luck!

you might want to touch base with La Leche League in Hong Kong "an international, nonprofit, nonsectarian organization dedicated to providing education, information, support, and encouragement to women who want to breastfeed. All women interested in breastfeeding are invited to attend or to call our Leaders for help. Babies are always welcome at our meetings."

Maybe the HK group has a list of breastfeeding friendly places in HK??

You can breastfeed whereever you want. If you don't mind people looking there shouldn't be any problem. I am breastfeeding my baby when he cries and don't care where it is. Have done it even in the MTR

WHERE TO BREASTFEED AND CHANGE A BABY IN HONG KONG .

Bumps to Babes - 5 Floor Peddar Building on Peddar Street, Central. Have a feeding/changing room.

Bumps to Babes - 21 Floor Ap Lei Chau, Horizon Plaza. Have a feeding/changing room.

The Mandarin Oriental, Central - 1st Floor powder room near the Grill. Lovely big chairs and telephone. Large mirror and nice attendants.

Marriott, Conrad, or Shangri-La, Admiralty - Most have washrooms with a bench and mirror. Also look for the more secluded chairs in lobbies.

Peninsula Hotel, T.S.T. - take the lift to the 1st floor where the bathroom is nice.

Hong Kong Hotel, Kowloon side near Star Ferry. Try any other large hotels as these usually have comfy chairs in the lobbies and clean washrooms for changing babies.

Jusco Department Store, Tai Koo - On the 2nd floor near the baby department there is a changing area and a place to breastfeed.

Pacific Coffee and Starbuck's shops - Most have large chairs and some even have play areas for older children.

Many of the newer Superstore Park N Shops have baby changing/feeding areas with chairs in them. Festival Walk (Kowloon Tong), Paradise Mall (Heng Fa Chuen), Maritime Square (Tsing Yi), Citygate (Tung Chung).

All Mothercare stores have changing areas and usually a chair to sit on. The stores are in Prince's Building, Ocean Terminal, Windsor House and New Town Plaza (Shatin).

Outside Toys R Us in Ocean Terminal there is a special glassed in area to breastfeed and change babies under the escalator.

Try the changing rooms of Marks and Spencer, Wing On, Lane Crawford or UNY. If they are not too busy they will usually let you use a room. Sometimes there are chairs. If not, the carpets are relatively clean.

Ikea in Causeway Bay, Shatin and Prince Edward (not far from Fa Yuen Street market) have changing tables and sometimes a chair. Try the cafeteria for breastfeeding. Usually quiet.

Chep Lap Kok Airport - There are baby changing rooms so you can change and feed your baby before getting on the plane. This is great if you need to wait a long time for your departure. Then you can nurse all the way to your destination on the plane! .

Discovery Bay/Star Ferries - The rocking motion will even help baby fall asleep!

Try feeding in McDonald's or a Chinese Dim Sum type restaurant. They are always noisy, so breastfeeding seems less obtrusive.

Dan Ryans, Shooters (on the Peak) are good places to eat with kids and they have changing tables.

Jaspa's Restaurant, Sai Kung - A good place to eat with kids, very comfortable with breastfeeding mums in the restaurant.

Olympic MTR station/shopping centre - Padded sofas and cubicles with lockable stalls to breastfeed in.

Annerley's Midwives' Centre in Lyndhurst Terrace. Changing table and breastfeeding facilities are also available (Unit 1801, Car Po Commercial Building, 18-20 Lyndhurst Terrace, Central)

Just an update and add to Matilda's list:

Ikea in Prince Edward has moved to Telford Plaza.

If you do go to Fa Yuen Street/Market then go to Grand Century Plaza mall. On the 5th Floor where all the baby clothing and stores are is a very clean and renovated mother's room complete with 2 changing tables and a big separate 'stall' with a bench for breastfeeding.

The Park N shop in Olympic city also has a separate mother's room.

IFC 2 mall has a great mother's room and one for dads apparently (although never been)! The one by Origins has wipes and a bottle warmer as well.

I just BF'd my l'il one on the mini bus yesterday! "you gotta do what you gotta do!"

I've been exclusively BFing for 4 months. I've found Marks & Spencers staff in all locations to be the most helpful (getting the largest changing room & chair). My son also enjoys the piped music & mirrors! Jusco also has good purpose-designed facilities.

There really should be a campaign to get proper feeding rooms in malls. Providing a diaper changing station in dirty bathrooms just isn't enough!!!

Well, I had a bad experience with Marks & Spencers in Taikoo Shing City Plaza, they turn me down and ask me to go to the toilet.

I am Chinese and I am still nursing my son who is now 13months old. I basically did it anywhere when he needed it. As long as you are discreet about it, no one really cares where you feed. I've never been asked to leave a place just because I'm breastfeeding. I think the community now is more acceptable to BF in public but on top of the places suggested, I'd like to add the 9/F of Times Square where they have a baby room for changing diapers and a room for feeding. I also see a bottle warmer but not sure if it works.
