Well we have only had a part bill as we moved mid month so a full month would work out at roughly $3200, we have a 2000 sq ft apt with 2 kids, air con on in living room prob 8 hours and in 2 bedrooms for 4 hours a day!!

electricity is very expensive in Hong Kong. there is no peak hour & non-peak hour rates, all is flat at about 3 times what you normally get for peak hours in Europe.

We have a 2,600sqft house & we pay about HKD10,000 a month.... which is ridiculous.

Oh my goodness!!!! A bill like that would lead us to bankruptcy!!!!!

Probably true FOTH but in Uk we dont have the aircon or dehumidifiers which makes it difficult for us to compare!!!

suze, you're not alone... HK$10K per month would bankrupt me too! and it can't be environmentally friendly either...

Our old house had central aircon (2900 sq ft) - we ran the bedrooms at night and living room during the day over summer, our bills ranged from $4000 - $6000 per month. We now have split aircon and run them in a much bigger apartment and our bills are more like $2500 per month.

Are electricity bills that high?.

We average $400 per month in the summer (1300 sq ft ), not much need for aircon as the apartment doesn't get hot that often.

Interested to know what the average water bill is as we share a meter & I'm sure it's wrong.

If your hot water is electric it can really add to the bill. Our bill at our first house here was astronomical because the house was on five levels and there were also five different hot water heaters. Moved to a flat all on one level with instant gas hot water and the bills even with six of us home all day are more like 2,500 in high summer with aircons running all night in three rooms. That is also running 5 or more dehumidifiers because it is a very misty area.

DA, that sounds wrong. You are probably overpaying by at least HK$1500 per year.

3 adults (including DH) + 2 kids; 1600 sq ft flat; air con in living room on most of the time during the day; air con in the 3 bed rooms on all night every day; tv + light + washer/dryer; average electric bill $2500 per month in summer $1000 in winter

water bill average $1000 per quarter: 2 showers everybody everyday (kids may take more); average 15 loads of laundry every week; cooking + cleaning, etc. This is expensive but we've been paying this amount for years. We've moved different flats over the years and the water bill stays about the same so never suspected there might be a leak or someone using my water. It's got to be our usage

We have just moved into a 1657 sf apartment just got our bill it was 3500 for the deposit and 2500 for 15 days of electricity.....roughly 5000 per month, but what are you going to do about it. it's too hot to have the aircons switched off. but I must say I was shocked.

Has anyone ever considered the flimsy and poorly insulated building quality, in particular the ridiculous quality of the typical HK aluminium windows, as a reason for the hight energy consuption? Lot of us living in multi-million-dollar flats with windows like squats! I just renovated my house (1.900 sft)and put quality double glased windows in. Energy consumption is down by 40%! The investment for the windows was just HK$40.000,-. Lot of funny things are regulated by the government. But essentials, like energy saving regulation found nowhere. For instance, would it make really a difference if one buys a flat and pay instead of HK$8Mio $40 or 50.000 Dollar more for a proper heat insulation? Not to mention environmental advantages.

Do you unplug your heavy appliances / computers / etc when you are not using them? In the States, there is modest electricity seepage/usage if you keep things plugged into the outlets (or at least that's what the energy conservation folks will tell you).

Also, does anyone know for the same amount of BTUs if a split air con is more energy efficient than a regular windown air con?

I thought i was the only one to be surprised by the electricity bill in hk. I moved here with my husband and my 6-mos old baby two months ago. And we are paying HKD 4,600 for a 1800 sqft apt with central air, about 16 hr of a/c in living room and master bedroom and one load of laundry everyday.

My last months bill was 9K HK and I wrote the electric company because our normal bill is between 4 and 6K a month...so something was way off and they wrote back and said basically "it is what it is" nothing they can do about it.

So at night my living room is now being shut off and the fans on and I'm turning up the air con's in upstairs during the day.

good luck with your bill.

i totally agree with mini mao! i have 700sft place and my bill is basically the same. i would die if my bill came back as huge as some of the ones here are!!!! have you guys every heard of not using air con and turning on the fan instead? its not that nice for the first week but you get used to it.

we have a 3000sf house, with a family of 7 plus a helper. our average electricity bill is 4-5 k every 2 months, our highest was 7k which was Jan to Feb when we had several heaters running constantly (we'll just put extra jumpers on this year). Our last water bill for 9/5 to 1/9/ was 671.47. Thats with showers and baths for 8 people each day and 15-20 washing loads....plus a helper that will always use a hosepipe when a bucket of water will do.
