"One of the most relaxing, rejuvenating and culturally interesting ways to spend an hour in Hong Kong is to get a massage. There are lots of places offering the service, but The Economist correspondent recommends the Sunny Paradise Sauna, which is open seven days a week. And although it is in Hong Kong’s equivalent of a red-light district, it’s strictly “no extras”, so there is no whiff of scandal.
That does not make it any less decadent, however. Men and women are on different floors, and the men have slightly more luxury. You enter into the sauna and jacuzzi area, where friendly staff will deliver fruit juices, cigarettes, and almost anything else you might wish for. The sauna is especially entertaining during horse races, as you will sit with other dripping Hong Kong men who are betting in front of a foggy TV. After the sauna, you move into the relaxation area, munch on some more fruit, read a newspaper and unwind.
Then it’s upstairs for the massage. Do not be intimidated by the railings on the ceiling. Yes, a large Cantonese woman will hang from them and walk on you, before pulling and poking muscles that you did not know you had. But after half an hour of this (or a full hour at HK$320), you will emerge feeling like a Bodhi Sattva."
