Its a personal choice, what suits one family will not suit another, You will get many different answers to this question depending on who you ask. The only thing to do is go and look at as many as you can and make up your own mind.

We have decided to send our childen to an English Foundation School, for us it's the closest thing to an Australian primary school.

That's a funny comment @@ - ESF study the english curriculum, and most don't have facilities even close to what an Aussie school would have. ie space, ovals, playing equipment, well resourced and teacher librarians in the library. Just my observations.

The other thing that I noticed when our kids were at an ESF is that they took on the english accent...had to stop that quick smart! ;-)

One school i am really impressed with - only visited and spent a few days there is Kellet School (independent), one other is Quarry Bay (ESF) Both of these schools are exceptional in many aspects.

In what ways do you feel they are exceptional?

Staff Morale and commitment to excellence. The executive seem to be up with everything and treat their staff with respect. Quarry Bay are leaders in the IT field in education in HK, and Kellett do whatever they do realloy really well. There is a great sense of community in both of these schools - with the staff and students loving to come to work/ school - I think this says alot about a school.

It is very much a personal choice, for example dimac4 has her opinion on Kellett and Quarry Bay however my choice would be totally different - you really do have to visit all of the Primary Schools and make up your own mind and I would say that there are many Primary Schools here that have a sense of community and where the staff and students love going to school/work and I would not agree that Quarry Bay was the leader in IT although it is very good I would choose another ESF Primary as the leader of IT education so it just goes to show what may suit one may not suit another so best to have a very good look at the ones you may think suit your children before you make a choice.

I've taught primary school students from a variety for schools all over HK, AIS, HKIS, Kellet, St. Paul's, Bradbury, Glenealy, Canadian International, Delia, FIS, GSIS, and HK Academy. Ultimately you really should visit each school - the students I had from each school were wide and varied and many had opinions about their personal school. Each school has its own atmosphere and focus.

However, i've stated this a few times on the Mom and Dads site - and that is this - parents are the ultimate best teachers for their child. If you feel your child isn't getting everything that you want them to get from their school - they probably are not. It's not the school's fault either - parents should be as active a participant in their child's education as the school itself. With that in mind, I often argue for proximity to home as the best school for your child - because it enables parents to visit the school often, students don't spend too long in commutes and bus rides back and forth, and instead you can optimize the time with your child. Parents truly are the best teachers - and schools are not the end all be all to their child's education. Morality, honor, judgement - these are things that are best taught by parents.

Good luck! I think most schools in HK are quite good - there is a wide variety, but there are positives and negatives to each. Take the time to visit and see what is happening at each school. Think about in which environment and atmosphere your child will thrive as well. That is the best school for your child.

If you are looking for a good academic foundation, especially in the Maths and Sciences, try the Singapore school there. Many parents dislike it's strong emphasis on academic excellence though...the same reason why many Singaporeans who left Singapore do not put their children in Singapore schools.
