I would like to find out more about buying a car in HK and sending back to Australia. Is it easy to do? Is it expensive and is it worth it overall?

Depends on your reasons...personal or to make money.. there are loads of rules and regulations which I am sure others can fill you in - I do know you need to have owned the car in HK for more than 12 months to reduce the tax, and there are also regulations about the age etc.

Car must be manufactured before December 1988 otherwise you must have owned it and used it for 12 months continuously in Hong Kong. Has nothing to do with reducing tax. You will pay 10% GST and 10% duty.

There was a posting a few days ago - (seems to have disappeared ED? a bcoover??)about sending a car to Oz, someone mentioned Santa Fe, claiming they did the whole process. Can get a 20" container at 30,000 or 40" at 50,000, for 2 cars apparently.

Import rules are here: http://www.dotars.gov.au/transreg/vsb/vsb_10.aspx

Shipping should cost no more than US$1500-2000 in a container. Roll on roll off is around HK$10,000. Insurance will be another cost (depending on car's value). You will have to pay for a customs broker in Oz - around A$800-1000, plus Aust compliance A$500-1000. Don't forget GST and import duty. Do your sums and choose your car very carefully. Costs will vary depending on who you use.

Make absolutely sure that the vehicle either complies with Australian standards, or can be modified to do so at a reasonable cost.
