Another high priced waste of space in Hong Kong. Surprise, Surprise..yet another store selling tacky clothing at outrageous prices.

Why can't they just open a Banana Republic or a Gap or a Target in this town? If only the local landlord cartel would see the sense in it!..Turn those ugly industrial buildings in Aberdeen into a giant US style chain stores...thats what i'd like to see happen.

Banana Republic, Gap are in LCX in Ocean Terminal. They won't take off in HK (according to my retail friend) because (a) Asians are different in size to Americans (b) Giordano, Baleno etc do similar clothing, but cheaper. Why not shop at the latter?

As much as Hong Kong might frustrate an expat living here, it's much improved over the past twenty something years.

Claire - even the last 10 years - with an acceleration in the last 6. With improvements in park n shop and Wellcome coming up with the concept of super stores. But still they seem to stack the shelves with lots of the same product - so you have a bigger space with the same brands - just more of it.

I almost have spritual experiences going through a grocery shop in Australia - wide aisles, so much choice, at reasonable prices with palpable freshness.

What I really hate about grocery shopping in HK is when they stack the aisles full of stuff so that only one person can get by at a time. Why do they do this?? There is space so we must fill it up mentality??

There is far to much "glam" and not enough middle market clothes and god forbid if you have a chest!! And even if you are inclined to buy designer wear do not dare to be bigger than a UK size 10! Yes there is a definite GAP! You may be lucky and a blouse that fits around the chest in Wan Chai but the only other place is M&S which can be boring and Zara which is frankly very shoddy workmanship.

dimac4 - perhaps it's because PnS and WE stores are aimed at the local market. Hong Kong people travelling to Australia would be hunting out the local Chinese delis. Also in Hong Kong people tend not to have the space to make a large weekly shop. And some of the older generation never use supermarkets.

Too often one has seen "exotic" items come and go in PnS and W because the demand has been too small.

This is why shops catering to non-locals disappear. Remember USA & Co and Redhill's [something] Republic? Good options for expats but there isn't the turnover required. Good for Olivers which has kept going all these years.

By the way everyone, Gap is no longer in HK. But then again, their location in Ocean Terminal, within another shop, was not the best.

Is this HK Harvey Nichs really the first outside of the UK? I thought there was one already in Shanghai and Dubai?

I think a good example of demand is the comparison of the number of people in Zara in comparison to an exclusive designer shop. In Zara you must queue for a dressing room and the cashier whilst sometimes you a flat out seeing another person in an exclusive/label shop (except for sale time). Clearly there is a demand for cheaper European clothing. Despite the quality.

Mummy, all those cosmetics counters rent space at the various department stores in Hong Kong. I think this is generally true at most department stores around the world. The salespeople at harvey nichols probably lost a commission, but the company they work for still got the sale. The "exclusive" stuff at Harvey Nichols would likely be the fashion apparel.

I really see Zara, Gap and Giordano as very similar. GAP is an overpriced Giordano, which has a much more reputable brand image (amongst expats and people outside HK) and Zara is more similar in price to Giordano but slightly more upmarket. A good place to go is Esprit - reasonable prices and selection of stuff. If you can be bothered, they have an outlet at the end of the Tung Chung Line in the shopping centre there (or at least they did 1 year ago).

I can't comment on the USA, but shopping for those kind of clothes in the UK isn't much more satisfying, even the UK equivalent of Giordano seem ridiculously prices.

Espirit has an outlet right in TST - opposite the HMV store near the peninsula (back south side) - bought 33 items for $2,000 (2 teenage daughters to clothe - so I love it!)
