We are renovating a village house and need to replace the plastic handrail on the stairs (3 floors and a roof). We had originally wanted to use wood but have been quoted $20,000 to do this which is way outside our budget. Does anyone have any recommendations as to what we could use instead of nasty plastic? We are trying to use natural materials in the rest of the house, wood and limestone so would need to blend in with that.
Many thanks

$20,000 sounds outrageously expensive. Are you sure that the contractor who quoted this is clear on what you want?

What about prefab iron stuff? Not 'natural' looking but can be still quite nice, and complementary.

Thank you Outdoors- Yes he is clear on what we want (he quoted for teak wood to match floor) and I would say its a bit fiddley as the stairs bend round.
Dimac4 Thank you too. What is prefab iron stuff- I've never heard of it and where could I go to have a look?

Not sure where you can get it - but I have seen a few houses with nice iron styled stair rails. I haven't done decoration in Hong Kong but would imagine there is a place in Wanchai that specialises in things of the house.. Not very helpful am i??

I'll have a look in the Home Design magazine and see if I can see anything similar- so yes you have been helpful.
